Hey Kevin!
I specifically remember playing a Junior High School (I think 6-8 grade) in your 'end' of the world back in the mid '80s. I just checked the atlas and it might have been Boise City. It was a small school (about 30 total students). I'm also fairly sure that the late LORING CAMPBELL (he played Chautauqua in the teens and twenties, and later school assemblies when Chautauqua died) was born in the panhandle. I saw Loring's program in October 1950. Great old pro. He wrote a column called "Campbell Caravan" in the old TOPS MAGAZINE. (CAMPBELL pronounced CAMEL). I think I was booked in almost every school in Oklahoma on that tour! I'm writing up a neat story about the senior high school in Pawhuska in my book. The Lawton Sr. High was a terrific audience, too. I'm also writing up the Hugo, Sr. High, as a very funny incident happened there also. You are fairly far from 'civilization'! When I played Ekalaka, Montana, I drove about 25 miles from Baker to the school (the only road). Ekalaka sounded like a LAKOTA word. I asked the school cook, who was from Pine Ridge. SD, what Ekalaka meant in Lakota. She said, "It means: 'pack up and go back!'" I later described the village as not being the 'end of the world' --but you can see it from there! Now that you've suffered through all that hysterical--oops--historical stuff: WELCOME! You'll fine that our motley crew is at least relatively friendly. "It" says 'slough illusions'. Does that mean that you schlepp a lot of plywood?

Yes! With a carnival, at the end of the week (or sometimes a 'three day spot', we would 'slough the joint' and take it 'down the road' to the 'next lot'. I broke in this business working in a 'ten in one' (sideshow) doing magic, fire eating and lecturing on the big snake. I was a teenager then, and now, I'm an octogenarian! --For many years, I was a FRISBEEtarian. (Frisbeetarians believe that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and sticks there!
I had at one time some Campbell Chautaugua brochures. His wife Kathryn, did ventriloquism. He had acquired, over years of trouping, a vast accumulation of books on the West. Sold the whole collection to a university in California. You're not too far from Syracuse, KS. Neat high school there (played it in the late '60s) School actually had an AUDITORIUM. (WITH A --RAKED--STAGE!) When I came on, I got a standing ovation! Very courteous--and FUN--group. They stood up when I finished, too. At Liberal,KS, I worked the H.S. in the afternoon. They had booked Virgil's old 'manager' who had decided he could do magic, too, that same evening. It was one of the worst magic shows that I have ever seen. His real name was C. A. Franck--mercifully I have forgotten the stage name he was using.
