There's something else that's been bothering me.
In the Mayberry Union High yearbook, Barney Fife's name is shown as Milton. But he wrote a column in the school newspaper called, "Pick-ups and Splashes by Bernard P. Fife." It was also once said his middle name was Oliver. What was Barney's secret? |

If the people can no longer trust those that are supposed to keep them safe, they will amass stockpiles of defensive devices and in their growing fear be increasingly tempted to use of those devices unnecessarily. The old curmudgeon at the end of the street will, in the minds of his neighbors, be an increased threat of fatal retaliation of a kid crossing his lawn. A neighbor might misconstrue a nasty look as a prelude to an offensive strike and in turn generate his own pre-emptive strike. A neighborhood watch meeting might start a discussion of the curmudgeon’s stockpile of WMDs ("M" being "medium" in this case) and, well, we've seen what can happen. Every war started with a misunderstanding and mistrust. Barney should not be remembered in that context. |

Thank you for the sage advise. My mom used to tell me to play nice with the other boys too.

It is not really about which facts you select to believe. It is about the we are all doomed attitude that is so prevalent among the pessimistic posters. Woland is a nice fellow, and not the only one who only sees the glass half empty all the time.

Al is left, Woland is right.
"Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet." Twain derives from the Old English twegen, meaning two. The phrase never the twain shall meet was used by Rudyard Kipling, in his Barrack-room ballads, 1892. Which is nowt to do with Barack before you start barraking me.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
