Psychometry is the one branch of magic that I think is the most likely to have a validity, in the non-stage world.
Just a gut-instinct, an object owned and used by, say, Hitler, would feel different from the same object, owned by St. Francis, or Albert Schwitzer, or anyone else known for benevolence and kindness. Just my thought, nothing to see here, Randi-boys, just move along... Oh, alright, here is something for you too- http://reason.com/archives/2009/06/12/wo......l-killer Call it Psychometry, Intuition, or Superstition--whatever it is, Anthony has tapped directly into it, with this unsettling and very strong routine. This will get to just about everyone in your audience, deeply creepy, wonderful bizarre magic. But forget the supernatural, because as well, you have the most terrifying protagonist of all, and that would be a member of our own human family, gone down the ugly dark path of murder and madness-the genuine monsters who are "real"- For many reasons, make sure your participant is relatively stable! I mean that-! The time period may be easily altered, but the prose, as given, fits very well the American Civil War, which will combine with a few other routines for me. Or I may change it up to the 1950s, when my Dad was an agent with the OSI, and may have been involved in similar investigations- OK, two sets of props then, and I will see which is stronger. My thanks to Anthony, I did NOT expect something this strong, and I will perform it respectfully, Bill Z. |

I have some of Anthony's books and I like the simple methods and the spooky stories they contain, and this one is even better, simpler and creepier!
The story is about a psycho, his gloves and some objects that belonged to the psycho's victim. All this nice piece of theater involves the participant completely, so I understand Balaram when he says "For many reasons, make sure your participant is relatively stable!" he is sooooo right. I would probably use this effect as a closer because of this strong emotional impact. The story props and background can be modified to fit any time period, quoting Wizard of Oz "For instance, I have a pair of ripped and stained gardening gloves that I could easily see fitting perfectly into this premise. While Anthony's story happens around the 1870s, I could see spinning this into something that happened 10 years ago." In fact I will have to translate the effect to Spanish and will probably play a bit with the time period. But that's fine as it makes the effect more personal... Which brings me to the argument between Chris and Anthony about making this a boxed ready to go effect. I would have gone both ways, sell it as a boxed effect with all the props and a PDF for those who want or have the time and opportunity to search for the required props. Luckily there is a big flee market this weekend in Barcelona, where I live, so I will be there searching for some psycho's pair of gloves. All in all a great effect, with an strong emotional punch, very simple method (it made me smile as I didn't see it coming) and easy to tweak so you can adapt it to your country, region, language or show theme. Good work Anthony

I got this a while back but only manage to read it through recently.
PSYCHO*metry is a story-telling piece. It's all about telling a story with several objects. There's 'an effect' involved, but most importantly, is the performer's ability to tell a good story. I enjoy this kind of magic a lot. If there's anything I can compare this to, it's sailor purse and much of Paul Voodini's recent works. This piece is very inspiring for me. Normally I shunned prop hunting effects, because it can be really really difficult to get antique stuff in my country. But I'm happy to say that I'm already looking around for objects that I can use for this. The best part; I need not get exactly the stuff used in it, it is highly customisable to anything I want. I have Anthony's previous work and I have never been disappointed. Keep up the good work, sir! |

There are only a few things that gets my heart racing and mind spinning...
Tall Red-Heads, a new Metallica album, my beautiful daughter & routines that invoke a very personal & emotional response from the spectator. Anthony Black is someone I have known for roughly 3 weeks, maybe exchanged 3 emails & posted one or two humorous comments on Facebook. Without trying to offend Mr Black, I wouldn't regard him as a close friend just yet, BUT after reading his latest work, I really want to get to know this guy a LOT more! I had only seen the preview video and decided to take the plunge and purchase this effect on a whim, having not read any of Anthony Black's material before I did not know what to expect. What I received was a 30something page eBook that details a beautifully disturbing tale of murder, suspense & very strong emotions. The journey Anthony takes you on during your reading of the eBook makes you feel like you are with him on stage, with Anthony performing this (im not going to say "effect") experience for you. The story is gripping, horrifying, shocking & ripe with emotion. I found myself reading faster and faster as I became more immersed in the story. By the end of the detailed script that Anthony provides, you are given a method so devious, so clean & so logical that you can perform this effect with so much confidence and attention to the story and journey for the spectators, the final revelation almost takes care of itself. What I like best about this routine is that you can adapt it to whatever style you like. Anthony has done a fantastic thing by NOT supplying the props. Now you can take his fantastic routine and mould it to fit your own style. I have already started making notes on how to fit this to a Jack The Ripper theme. After reading this I instantly purchased another of Anthony's effects and I can't wait to sink my teeth into it when I get back home! This routine kills! Literally! Cheers, Art.

Many thanks for the kind words/review Art, I'm looking forward to seeing how you develop this into a Ripper theme.
I am really pleased you are all as happy with this piece as I am, and I look forward to hearing about how you all make PSYCHO*metry truly YOURS! Quote:

So...
Some news for you all. There are still a number of you that still wish for me to release PSYCHO*metry with all of the props, which is understandable as it's a chance to create something truly beautiful. But for me it's a bit financially risky, as I don't like the idea of pre-orders, so all of the equipment and props needed would require a hefty investment on my part. But I have listened to you all and I have come up with a solution. I have just submitted it as a project via Kickstarter, so for those of you that wish to own a collector’s edition...soon you will have the chance. I will be limiting the number of sets produced for exclusivity reasons; once they are gone that's it! These will be very limited editions. When the project goes live (I hope soon) I will be sending out all the information via my newsletter first to those that have signed up, if you have not then just check out my signature. Have a great weekend, Anthony |
