I work in a magic shop. We sell Vernet's thumb tips, but they are all flesh colored (caucasian). What do people with different flesh tones do when they need a thumb tip? Is there a way of coloring/dyeing a thumb tip in a different flesh tone?

As I come from Asia (adopted to Sweden). I go for the Japanese thumb tips. They work well for the smaler things but when I need a big tip like for my cigar, I have a large vernet thumb tip that I have sanded down and painted with artist quality acrylic paint to match my thumb perfectly. If you paint the thumb tip, don't forget to use a dull laquer to protect the paint if you do not want to re-paint every seconed week and don't forget to use some nailpolish on the nail of the thumb tip.

I am caucasian and they don't match me either. Back in the sixties I watched a lecturer demonstrate the use of a thumb tip to a magic club. He was great! At the end of the lecture, he remarked, "Did you notice that my thumb tip is red?" And it was! No one noticed. He proved to me that I was my thumb tip color problem. With proper practice and routining, it is hard to catch. Use your other fingers and parts of the hand to block the angles. It can be done! Its greatest use is as a container, not as a visual prop. Think of it like a dye tube. Some of mine are black.

Duane Laflin teaches a thumb tip routine and it is never used on the thumb.
I still use it on my thumb occasionally but for the most part use it as he teaches.

ChrisG,
Life is a thumb tip and sometimes I actually use one correctly too. However, as a container, it doesn't go on my thumb either. Instead, I manipulate it (the long ones) like a concealed cigarette until I need the contents again. It is especially good for a stack of dimes or dice. |

I agree with manipulating the tip so that it cannot be seen, regardless of color. I usually use my middle finger and use the larger tip. I always do a vanish at an angle wherein the spectator is looking, head on, at the part of my fist into which I am pushing the silk. That way, you can be a foot away, and doing everything in slow motion, and the tip cannot be seen. The tip can also be transferred from hand to hand using very natural moves with a little experimentation. And, lay audiences "in the know" about thumb tips can see that you obviously aren't wearing one (because it is on the well hidden middle finger rather than on your exposed thumb).
