I wear a hat almost everyday... period performing or not. And I was struggling myself with hat etiquette. From my understanding hats are allowed in public areas except when eating; in a religious house; in a private home; elevators are iffy... but if a lady comes in... hat off; and a few other things but that's about it. BUT... I believe if the hat is part of a performers attire it is quite alright. If everyone else took their hats off (if people wore them like they used to) then that would set you apart... and being a performer and that being part of your attire it adds a special look to you that is more than acceptable. Please correct me if I'm wrong about the being a performer part.

Just so it does not create offense is the rule I recommend.

A hat is part of my costume and Character. I will tip my hat when a lady, priest or minister enter but it goes back on my head. When doing shows in a synagogue I wear a small Yarmulke under my hat.

After 26 years in military I cannot wear hat indoors. Even running to store in a ball cap I instinctively take it off moment I cross a door. But don't see anything wrong with a performer wearing one indoors. Also think its great to see a man tip his hat to a lady...quaint classy custom.

I think that is a true strength of wearing a hat. It adds more to your character... and can be used with magic. Tipping a hat to a lady looks great. I've heard it so many times... but I can't remember who said it but the quote is something like this
"I consider it a successful show when the women want you and the men want to be you" Plus... I always get asked to pull something out of my hat. Hat's can make for a good ice breaker with audiences.... and ladies =] |

I believe Calen Morelli had a short street magic effect with the card jumping to his hat, and then the rest of the deck following suit. I somtimes blend this in with my ACR when appropriate with patter like: Sometimes your card will jump higher than expected, and want to get away from the rest of the deck. Have I ever touched my hat this entire time?... etc. Going to: and if I squeeze the deck... all the cards except your card jump to my hat as well, wanting to follow your card's example!
