You can ask to do the talent show with him. I did a couple of talent shows with my daughter at that age, and we performed to music. one of them, we came on stage as looking like the magician with his "pupil". Whatever I did, it went wrong, and she got it to work (change bag, square circle, silk through neck). In the end, I offered a piece of gum from a box with the word gum on on side and a picture of a snake on the other. Shee ends up waving her hands over me and produced a mouth coil. When we walked off stage, I dropped my top hat, and she picked it up and wore it off.

Show a silk. Produce a cane. Give it a slight toss upward. (silk to cane)
Produce a changebag tucked in the top of pants at the small of the back. under misdirection of the cane production/toss. Produce the "changed" silk from the changebag as if it was the original. Obviously it's not but who cares. Do a simple change-bag trick with a larger production of silks at the end (not too large) Produce a latex dove from the silks .. just like in vegas.. pretending it's real Stare at the bird, shrug, toss the bird back over his shoulder and take a bow. The dove would be folded up and secured with a rubberband. Several funny moments, easy to do, no patter necessary, can be done to music, heck, I might start my own change-bag routine like that from now on.

Quote: This changes things a great deal. I stand by my original answer - for a kid who just wants to learn one trick for a one-time show. But, since he "DOES" have an interest in magic, I agree with the others, that the Mighty Fool's change-bag routine is the way to go.On 2013-04-23 09:20, Danny Diamond wrote: I appreciate the thoughts and concerns. I do want to also point out that the kid DOES very much have an interest in magic. But remember, he JUST turned 8yo - so yeah, he has no experience yet (slacker - he shoulda been back-palming at 5yo like the rest of us). |

My daughter (10) just participated in a school talent show with her friend. They had expressed interest in doing magic for the show (hmm, I wonder why?), so I helped them construct a 3 minute performance I thought was appropriate.
First, they did everything to music (no lines). I figured things can only go wrong trying to remember what to say. They selected "Rasputin" as the song. They did three effects: 1st girl came out and produced a stuffed rabbit from a top hat 2nd girl came out and produced a flower from a flower pot Then both performed mis-made flag. One was the magician and the other the assistant. They hammed it up with the magician taking bows after each mis-made flag was produced...only to be tapped on the shoulder, etc. It was well received....especially considering most of the performers were playing their piano recitals. It was a lot of fun for the kids and me. Good luck! |

I had a friend's 7 year old son use a mirror tube, four 18 inch silks and one colorful blendo.
He had each one of the four silks represent a favorite subject at school such as math, art, reading, and science. But then he announced his favorite subject was Recess and he slung out the blendo to roaring applause. It turned out great. |

The kid might be too young to remember his patter or might get to nervous. Try a non-patter act with music playing.
