I was wondering if anyone has picked up Lewis' latest book "Persona". What are your thoughts? I understand the material involves information from your spectator.

Hi
I cant comment on the book, however anything from Lewis is great. I have ordered directly from him. details of teh book contents below Persona Lewis Jones Limited Edition — 300 Copies only This is a book of effects that make use of a spectator’s personal data — mostly, information you could not have known beforehand. Usually, it will be the spectator’s name, but it could be anything: his marital state, the kind of car he drives, the names of his children or household pets, the book he’s currently reading, his favourite movie, whatever suits the occasion. The spectator’s personal data represent the kind of person he is, and the image of himself that he wants to present to the world. This is his persona. All the effects use ordinary cards: no gimmicks or props. Study for two hands. Spectators shuffle and spell-deal their names with cards in their own hands, yet produce unbeatable Blackjack and Poker hands. Watch this space. A spectator causes her freely chosen card to turn over in the deck, move to a chosen location, turn invisible, then re- appear magically in the middle of the table. The bond. Two partners shuffle, then spell-deal their own names: this produces matching cards, which tell them how long they have been together. The rainbow test. A card trick without cards. Anyone mentally chooses a secret suit and value and puts them together to create a card. You read his mind. The infinity count. Reach any target card by spell-dealing a stranger’s name and personal details. Call security. One spectator hacks into another spectator’s bank account. Lexicon. Anyone chooses three cards, re-arranges them in any order to form a page number, and selects a word. You divine it without any questions. Poetic licence. Spectators select secret words, then merely think of any words that rhyme with them. You read their minds without any questions. The invisible deck. Anyone chooses an invisible card from an invisible deck. The card suddenly appears visible. http://www.hutch.demon.co.uk/lewis/perso......ones.htm |

We have had the book at the shop for about two months now and I can vouch for it. I am a fan of Lewis' work though, so I might be biased. Poetic Licence, Rainbow Test, and Call Security were some of my favorites. If you are interested in Lewis' books, you might want to hurry. He publishes limited print runs and they tend to go out of print. I should have more copies at the shop in the next week or so.

I enjoy his magic as well, but have hard time paying $45 + shipping for a small softcover. For that kind of money I want something that's going to hold up over time.

I think Duane is talking about some of the newer mentalism titles:
Scryer, Volpe, Gauci and he is correct! Overall, mentalism books are quite a bit more expensive. Also, illusion books are expensive. So, the subject, as far as books go right now, makes all the difference. If you look at the titles you listed, they are all Hermetic Press titles. Stephen Minch does not believe in overpriced mentalism books or overpriced books in general. I believe he prices his books based on his costs for printing and not the "value" of the material. He is one of the few that does that. We price our own H & R publications the same way. It is based off of our cost and not what we think the book is "worth." You can make a living in mentalism with just Hermetic Press titles though, so you don't have to spend a ton for softcover mentalism books. As for the cost of the Jones book. I base the price on what it takes to get the bulk order shipped to me in the U.S from the U.K. You can get it from Lewis for $38. I also don't want to undercut Lewis, since he self publishes and only does a small print run. I just like offering as many titles to my customers as possible, so I can keep H & R Magic Books a valuable resource for book lovers. Every one free to price their material as they see fit. Again, my issue isn't with the price, but the way the material is packaged. I've had far to many softcover books fall apart because of only moderate use. If I'm going to pay 35+ dollars for a book, I want it to hold up. If Lewis' idea is to print his books in small numbers in order to give it more value, the purpose is defeated if it doesn't hold up to use.

Motown,
I completely understand. I would much rather have a hard cover book (as long as it was done well). I was just trying to explain the pricing I used for Lewis' book. On a different note, I noticed you were a Wings fan. You guys are well on your way to knocking us (the Stars) out of the playoffs. Somehow you always seem to sneak into the playoffs. Should be a good game on Saturday! Marshall H & R Magic Books http://www.magicbookshop.com marshall@magicbookshop.com |

Hi Marshall,
I understood what you were pointing out. H&R is great resource. I for one am glad you're in business. Good to see you're a Hockey fan. I grew up down the street from Madano. I've got my fingers crossed the Wings make the playoffs. It's been a tuff year.
