Hey folks, I'm not a regular poster in this part of the Café, but can one of you please guide me to a book or thread where I can find the most effective methods for knots that make it appear like a ring or pendant is threaded onto a string but in fact is easy to remove. Apologies in advance if there are many threads like these - I'm in a bit of a time crunch to help a friend with a routine for a student film project, etc. Thank you!

I'd check out Jay Scott Berry's Symphony on the Ring and Ribbon (the ribbon has many advantages).
I don't think it has all the moves or all the best moves but you could get a good start here. Ray Grismer has some great work. Are you considering a Jardine Ellis ring or ?... Read this (get ready for a wall of print). Good luck. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=4 -Mary Mowder |

There is an effect in a book by Harry Blackstone Jr. which I believe is titled "200 Magic Tricks Anyone Can Do" and is an effect that calls for rings, washers, Chinese coins or any item with a hole in the middle of it to be threaded on a length of ribbon or string. For this brief description, assume Chinese coins are being used. After one is 'tied' on to the string, the two ends of the string are passed through a stack of Chinese coins and it is shown they cannot escape from the other end, due to the coin that is tied to the string. With two people holding the ends of the rope, you drape a handkerchief over the coins and leaving the ends visible, you remove the stack of coins and then remove the handkerchief to reveal the remaining coin still tied to the string.
It is a simple and easy to master effect. |

What you are looking for is Ring On Ribbon, string, or rope tricks. Yes, this section has hundreds of this type of effects discussed.
You can forget about it if you are in "crunch" as this type of magic takes practice and rehearsal. It is not self working. There is one self working ring and shoe lace trick sold in a New York Magic shop, Fantasma Magic, you can try that, but it still take some rehearsal and a bit of a knack to master. http://www.fantasmamagic.com/proddetail.php?prod=4904 |

If you're looking for something like the Blackstone effect that Dr_J_Ayala described, just about any beginner's magic book in your nearest public library will have somnething like it. You can probably even Google something like "Ring Off String" and find it.

Wilson's Complete Course has one that would look the same to the spectator, but uses lifesavers (and a different method). The Ency of Rope has one using checkers (w/holes), called Check-R-X. In this one a single strand of the string is fairly strung through the bottom checker (not tied), and then both strands are threaded through the other checkers before being tied into a loop. So it sounds different than Blackstone's. If anyone has performed Blackstone's method, I would like to hear if it was deceptive. I think that if I saw it done, I would figure it out a lot quicker than I did from just the above description. (although the Ency of rope does have a way to make the "guilty" part look more legitimate). John

The trick the Dr. Ayala was referring to may be in a book by now. I only knew of it as one of my 1st magic tricks purchased from the local magic shop for $50 cents. D. Robbins/E-Z Magic marketed it and not to recently I seen it again on their wholesale website, but I just looked and cannot find it, as I cannot remember the name of the trick.
Mine came with a stack of yellow plastic Chinese coins and one red coin. along with a day glow yellow shoe lace. I still have the trick in my beginner storage of tricks. It works on the old "Chinese Knot" principle of looping the red coin through the middle of the shoe lace. As described, a hanky for cover is used. |

I noticed that the Blackstone Jr. book was on the shelf, looks like new publication. I took a look through it and could not find the referenced trick in the coin section. Flipping through several times, I did not notice it. So I cannot verify if it is the same trick D. Robbins/E-Z Magic marketed. I bought a Trevor Lewis book instead. Maybe next time. |

Probably the fact that the book referenced by John & DJA is by Harry Blackstone (Sr./Gibson), not Blackstone Jr. might be the source of confusion.

My fault - it was indeed Harry Blackstone Sr.
I have no idea why I kept typing Jr. The book was penned by Harry Sr. and an introduction was given by Walter Gibson. The book was originally published as "Tricks Anyone Can Do" and later republished as "200 Tricks Anyone Can Do" (rightfully so) by the Carol Publishing House. |

I will have to check again, but why I looked through the book was because on the cover Harry Blackstone Jr. name was printed on it. Not Sr. I did a web search, but did not find this new publication on line with the cover I seen. Yes, Walter Gibson name was on the cover as well.
