Here is a link of a video preview of the Bottom Ridge Shells doing a new version of the shot glass surprise with a new twist. The shot glass is never moved.
http://www.3shells.com/shell-game-store.html They have a sale going on that has the shells with the full accessory package. I already had everything, but the Magnum Snatcher. I order it and received it Thursday. This tiny magnetic device is very strong, n52 grade. The magnet and housing is very small to bring in and out without being notice. This is the first magnetic device that I have felt comfortable in using my hands when holding a magnet in them. The clipping housing knob works great. It also works great with their metal blended sweet peas. |

Looks nice, though the demo practically put me to sleep.

Yes the demo was not a regular routine. Just mostly to show some of the features that come with the shells and some of the the features that have been in question, if the Bottom Ridge Shells could do the shot glass surprise or all the shells in one hand.

The shells are an unusual design and have a very wide bottom ridge that I'm not used to. However, I like that you can roll the shells around with the pea inside. I like that you can grip them with one hand. You also have spent a lot of time developing about every variation on the pea and shell I've ever seen. Very cool! I particularly like the pea pod - the reappearance in the pod is very magical and logical. I may be visiting your site for that soon.

Actually the ridge is not that wide. Most of it is the shell wall thickest. I think why it looks big to you, is you are comparing it to the standard shells used today.
They have no ridge at all. But real walnut shells do have a ridge. The size of the ridge can vary on all the real shells. So it is even hard to compare it to a real shell. The real walnut shell has a ridge to hold the nut in place. Here it keeps the pea in the shell, till you want it. You have full control on everything you do and the ridge appears to be an advantage to the spectator. I have never had a spectator think anything is wrong with these shells. That is what makes them so good; you have nothing to hide with these shells. Not that you need to; but the shells and the pea can be fully examined at any time without switching anything out or using any special peas. When gambling for money the no touching rules can apply without any thought. I think in magic the no touch rules are looked on as being different; if he won’t let me touch anything, he is hiding something. To me it is like apples and oranges on rules that apply for gambling for money too entertainment. I don’t think you want to encourage the handling of them, but you don’t need to run away from it any more. The shells and peas were designed to take away all the clues and rules. At the same time they can do everything the standard shells can do and much more. They were designed for the magician. The con man does not buy walnut shells or even use them. When they did, they used real walnut shells. I think it can't get any better than using real walnut shells. But you can never get three shells that look all the same. I made the molds from a real walnut shell without adding putty on the inside to give the right head space and keep a natural look on the inside and outside of the shell. This is why the cheap Vernet shells work well, from having the right head space and without that thick wall taper. With some bottom sanding the design is good, but the appearance is very toy looking. All of our shells have an entire flat surface. The Chanin dip and the back shell notch are all clues that are not needed. Even the con man knows this. Bottle caps, match boxes or any other items that are used, do not have these alterations. So, why do the walnut shells need it? What I hear; it is a nature notch from breaking it off from the tree branch. Well a plastic shell did not come from a tree and the fact still remains it is still a visual hole for the pea to exit from the shell. All of these alterations are sales gimmicks to me. To make it a self-working trick that a ten year old can do. To be able to sale more of them; as you don’t need magician’s secret skills to use them. Not that the new shell design is harder to use. Once you know the secrets on how to use them, I find they are easier to use. As a magician, I don't want to be putting time into a trick that any ten year old can do in a few minutes and most the time all they are doing is revealing how it is done. Most the time a self-working trick is design to do it one way and the item being used has more control than you. Don’t take me wrong, self-working tricks can work well with the right presentation. But they are still limited in what they can do, in most cases. This is not the case with the Bottom Ridge Shells. Yes, the con-man does not use these shells either. But it is more likely an item they would use. This is the magicians chance to take advantage of how it has been done and known. Using the new unique designs that are not known and are not sold in any stores to help keep the unique secrets for the working magician. These are my opinions and you may have your own and I welcome your input.

I really like many of the possibilities and moves that can be done with these shells. But I dislike the look of the walnut shells and think they look gimmicky and un-natural. That being said I really like many of your shell alternatives. Especially the Renaissance and Pirate "shells". Have you ever considered making oversized thimbles for thimble rigging.

Like I said about, you may have your own opinions and if that is how you see them, they are not for you. You have to be comfortable in what you are presenting. The True Walnut Shells that I have are more like the standard shells that are probably more for you, if at any point you were looking to get some shells.
Because if you see them wrong, the spectator will too. But the fact remains they are not gimmicky and everything can be shown to prove it. Standard shells is gimmicky and they cannot really prove they are not, including my True Walnut Shells that has the standard design. As for not looking natural you must be talking about the ridge bottom that the standard shell don't have, as with the True Walnut Shells. The ridge on the BRS is not exactly the same as a real walnut, but a real walnut does have a ridge unless you scrap it off. The inside and outside are exactly the same as a real walnut. From my findings the spectator takes it just the opposite of being gimmicky. I find them looking at it as a more fair game of having a chance. As they are able to see the pea cannot come out when move around on the table. This cannot be done with the standard shells, including my standard shells. The shells I have on the site are just a few of the shell molds I have made. I have been making my own shells for over twenty-five years. Yes, I do have a large thimble mold. Actually I will be putting up a new thimble chop cup soon. It is 2-1/2" high & 2-3/8” in diameter at the bottom. For thimbles, I think I have five to six different sizes. It has the words on it “just a thimble full” The ball material is like the shell peas that are a metal blend, but are bigger, 3/4" olives. They are green with the orange center. No sound and very easy to finger clip. Also comes with two clear plastic glasses. That are used at the end when stating what goes good with olives is a nice martini and the thimble is picked up to have a martini with a olive in it. This is after the thimble had just been held up off the surface, to appear empty. The martini is really water. The thimble is sat down, to drink the martini. After you finished drinking the martini; the thimble is picked up again and there is another martini with an olive in it. “That was so good, I just had to have another one, as it was not even a thimble full”. But it is a very big thimble you are using. I think there are a lot of ways to present it, with using different patter. You can also get it without a magnet in the cup and work it other ways. The plastic martini glasses fit perfect in the cup to hold the water fill glass up off the surface and will stay in the cup till the thimble cup is lifted after it has been sat down. I will probably put out the thimble rigging down the road. When I was performing I did a lot of magic in nice cocktail lounges at country clubs and hotels. I make most all my close up magic tricks from coins, cards, shells, chop cups, ring boxes, and many other close-up tricks. Now that I am getting older and not performing, I decided to share some of the materials I had made and designed over the years. I don't want to mass produce any on them, as it is much more fun this way and enjoy what I am doing. Thanks for sharing your input and hope you are having fun.

Nice ending.
The thing I like best about the shells. Is that like the cups and balls other things can be used instead of shells. Like thimbles, sea shells, I remember being in a dollar store looking over several things that could be used for the shellgame. Cheers!

Thanks Glenn,
I agree with you. To me the shell game can be done with so many different items than just walnut shells. That is why I have so many shell molds. Everywhere I go; my eyes are open for new fun items that could be used. I have lost count on how many different molds I have, but I'm sure it is over a hundred. I know that is NUTS! But it has been fun. When I was performing I had a lot of regulars that I would see almost every day. So I did not want to show the same old stuff. Actually my biggest collections of shells are not walnut shells. For me I wanted to present something that I thought had more surprise and more hands on spectator fun. But I was more for making it magical, than doing a con game demonstration. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with the con game demonstration act, as it fits many people very well. That is what I love about magic; there are no set ways to display it. Cheers to you!

Like I said, you do really nice work, and magicians having lots of options is great. However, your marketing style is off-putting. Hype your own stuff like crazy, but it's probably better if you cut the endless (and often inaccurate) negative comments about your competition. |

As I said in the post you are referring too; these are my opinions and you may have your own and I welcome your input. I also said; yes, the con-man does not use these shells either. (Meaning my shells) But it is more likely an item they would use. What I said is the type of shells the con man use are flat surface type shells like; bottle caps, match boxes and so on. What I should have stated is the True Walnut shells is what I was talking about, when it comes to the con man. Which the True walnut shells that I sell fit more to what they are using. The True Walnut shells are like the standard type shell with no alterations to the bottom of the shell that has an entire flat surface, like what they do use. I'm sure you know that the con man does not buy any walnut shells of any design. They use common items that they can get rid of, if need be at very little cost to them. The True Walnut shells I brought out are designed for the ones that want a shell more on the line for the con man display. As for the Bottom Ridge shells, it has been pretty clear these were designed for the magician for a more magical display. I am not putting down any competitors. Never have I given any names. I have given praise to competitors where I thought it should be given, like the Vernet shells in many posts and even on my website. I am talking about the alterations to the shells in general and I don't see anything wrong that I believe in the products I sell. Thanks for all your input and opinions!
