I have had a look around and there is no thread on this.
I am interested in learning contact juggling but I don't know how to start Can you make home-made balls to start with?(and how to) Is there a good dvd or is it better to learn on you tube for nothing? |

Almost any ball will do. I recommend lax balls (Lacrosse)

Stage balls are good to learn with. Also, there are "practice" contact balls now too.
If its resources for learning hit YouTube or http://www.juggling.tv

I have bin teaching cj for a while in the sca, then some one gave me a copy of James Ernst book, and for the most part it is what I teach. I have to look for this person and thank them! the book predates my classes by some time, but he is scadin so it was a bit twilight zone to read this book.
I started with 3" stage balls, a bit big, and a bit light, but way better than say tennis balls. to small and way too light.

If you're interested in a more complete study of contact juggling with a good amount of advanced work along with the basics, you can't go wrong with my Visual Encyclopedia of Contact Juggling four volume DVD set. And yes, that is a shameless plug.

When I first started I used an orange. I now have several sets of acrylic balls, clear and blues and an array of sizes, I also have several crystal and glass balls and even an aluminum one I like to use in a place they won't fall and break, like on grass or at the beach. I've never seen any CJ dvd's I learnt off the internet, mainly youtube. If I see moves I like I copy them until they are mastered. Once you get the feel for CJing with practice you can replicate pretty much any move.
I've busked with CJing and I use it as part of my magic show as seen in my profile picture. One word though Practice and good luck

What are people's reviews on the TV promoted Fushigi ball? It appears to be a nice size and weight. Although I believe the advertising is mis-leading it would still seem that the sphere itself may have some merit. Comments?

I wouldn't use one. They can shatter, takes a bad drop though. The mirrored centre isn't "centred" disrupting, somewhat, illusionary aspects of single ball CJ.
Learn with a contact stageball, 3-4 inch diameter. Then progress to an acrylic or silicone ball, for single ball CJ. For multi-ball acrylic all the way. It's a personal preference. |

The Fushigi is modern day snake oil
The whole idea of the Fushigi makes me want to spend my money elsewhere.

I want to learn a simple, but somewhat impressive looking contact routine with a golf ball size ball that only lasts about a minuet at most, to use in a caught bubble routine. Something along the lines of "When we grow up we lose the magic so I like to play with bubbles" sort of thing. Any suggestions on where to learn?
Reality is a real killjoy.

Hey all. Just thought I'd touch base here to find out if the experienced CJers can recommend a good learning source. I'm still a newbie "magician in training," and the other disciplines all seem to have a collection of what most folks agree constitute the best sources or teachers.
Any advice here? Thanks! Oh, and I don't have a practice ball yet. I do have a hard softball (that sounds strange:-)) that basically fills my hand. So maybe I could start with that? Cheers! Ken |

Everyone complains about Fushigi balls, but I do think the Fushigi video is good. (I'm talking about the DVD not the quality of the silver ball.) You might be able to get the video without the ball on ebay.

I bought my Fushigi at goodwill w/cd and stand for 4$. It's perfectly fine for cj. Good size and weight.
The double center may actually enhance the "floating" effect.
