I actually told iain if his judgment was that th omni was in his opinion different enough from Riggs work I would openly post an apology to the perceptionist here.
Looks like I don't have to... Oooo invective????? No.... You were recommended to own up to your actions and get ready for consequences. I've seen many magic store sites begin to pull the omni. As willie wonka said "you lose sir"

I do think one or two points are valid - I'm not aware of any interactions between the differing TWs and b**ns that are out there (or their blatant photographs on magic sites!)...
I sent the review to john too... I think it boils down to a few things: 1) common courtesy/respectable business practices/ethics 2) there are differences between the two pads, whether there's 'enough', is down to the reader of my review 3) others might have different opinions 4) just because you CAN do something, does not mean necessarily that you SHOULD do I think mark zust should have bought this to market? I think he should have sent a copy to john, and had a chat about things...

Thank you, Iain. Nicely done. Just a few clarifications. The pad also comes with a 20-page full color e-manuscript with several routines, handling tips (for those more accustomed to other impression devices and getting their peek) and care instructions. The OmniPad Mini is $40, the OmniPad Stage is $45, and matching ungimmicked pads in either size are $10. Shipping in the US for up to three pads, any combination, is $10. Prices reflect my not having to sell below wholesale to the distributors, so I can pass that savings on to the community. All items can be ordered directly from me.
Iain, I appreciate that you're more comfortable with John's pad since you've been using it for a long time. Give the OmniPad a fair chance in performance and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I've sold dozens of pads since this controversy began and the comments I'm receiving are very supportive. As I've said before, let's allow the market to decide. Cheers and best of luck. Mark PS - If anyone else has additional questions, please email me privately. Thank you.

No he didn't that isn't private it is a section that has 50 posts to access. PMs do not allow people to see anything for open discussion. So you mean, please post questions in INNER THOUGHTS?

I mean that anyone can send me a question about the OmniPad via my email address. Let's keep it simple.

To this rash of absurdiies, dad replied:
"(1) I don't have time to address these issues other than to say I have way too many shows right now to dig into the discussion. I'm going to be in five different states this month and have given this matter the attention it deserves, out of respect and appreciation to the people who have acted on my behalf. I appreciate more than words can convey the support from the mentalism community, and I'm not engaging in hyperbole when I say that I love you all for it. I've been deeply touched by your support and friendship, and know if there's anything I can do for you all you have to do is ask. (2) Neon magic slate as an impression device goes back to Robert Nelson and before. The neon slate is a material used for window decals, and can be bought in huge rolls from sign companies. The motive force is static electricity, causing the two layers to cling together when pressure is applied. John Cornelius's Pinnacle Pad used it as the MO back in the 1980's and Penn & Teller included it as an impression device--with very detailed instructions on how to use it to clip someone and read their mind--in their book Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends. If a person prefers the neon slate, all you have to do is put it in The Cicada. The insert is removable and you can put carbon paper, magnetic film, waxed paper, anything you like. I've conducted extensive experimentation with all manner of impression materials (see my book DEVIOUS CONTRAPTIONS) and do not use the vinyl as it's sensitive to humidity and especially reactive to heat. They curl up like a worm in a hot car. Nor do I use magnetic film due to safety and health issues. Also, it reacts to ANY pressure, often obscuring the impression when manhandled by less than dexterous audience participants. My intital Brown Hornet came in three models: carbon paper, magic slate and neon slate. Based on feedback from the community, I quickly discontinued all but the original magic slate. (3) Lee Earle's microthin clipboard was nothing like mine. Speculation that mine was inspired by Lee's is not true, and in fact Lee himself said my Brown Hornet was a quantum leap in clipboards. There is a principle of physics involved in my Brown Hornet technology that seems to escape the people who knock it off. It was the realization I could incorporate the principle of inverse/square law into the device that I take credit for, not the invention of the materials. (4) I was not unpleasant to Mr. Zust. In fact, I was quite polite but I did call him on his lack of mentalism knowlege and/or ethics. If Mark found the shoe an uncomfortable fit, then one must consider the possibilty that one is wearing inappropriate footgear. (5) Finally, my devices aren't for everyone. It says so clearly on my website. Beginners need more experience before moving to my material. Speakers and sales people who use mentalism and magic as a tool to make their points are neither mentalists nor magicians, and they have no knowlege of the traditions and body of information we specialists require. It doesn't surprise me that people looking for the easy way have difficulty with my products. I deal with e-mails almost daily from people who have apparently never seen a magic slate and need guidance. The bottom line is that my tools were designed by me for my own professional use, and word of mouth spread the fact of their existence worldwide--somewhat to my surprise. I have never hyped them, nor relied on quotes or referrals to sell them. I assume that they will stand or fall on their own merit. (6) My products will never be mass-marketed. EVER. I don't need the extra income from these products. It's nice to have it, but the time I set aside to fulfill demand for my items could also be used performing shows. More than once, as many of you know, I tried to shut down operations to focus more fully on my performing career, but there was such an outcry that I relented. Thanks everyone for your support and let me know if there's anything I can do for you. I'm on the road most of the next few weeks but will reply to e-mails. John R" |

My turn:
Responses to John Riggs' May 23 post (Edited. My responses directly follow each of John's numbered comments: "(1) I don't have time to address these issues other than to say I have way too many shows right now to dig into the discussion. I'm going to be in five different states this month and have given this matter the attention it deserves. John, I'm glad to hear you're busy. So am I. In June alone I'll be presenting magic and mentalism performances plus speaking, training and invited lectures in several states. Hopefully others on this thread are equally busy... (2) Neon magic slate as an impression device goes back to Robert Nelson and before. I've conducted extensive experimentation with all manner of impression materials (see my book DEVIOUS CONTRAPTIONS) and do not use the vinyl as it's sensitive to humidity and especially reactive to heat. They curl up like a worm in a hot car. Yes, I'm aware that vinyl has been around for decades. John, I've not experienced the vinyl curling up in the heat. The specific material I place in the OmniPad and Stealthboard Reloaded has worked perfectly in over 400 professional performances over the past 2 1/2 years. Perhaps the material source I've located is different and superior to what you've experimented with? (3) Lee Earle's microthin clipboard was nothing like mine. Speculation that mine was inspired by Lee's is not true, and in fact Lee himself said my Brown Hornet was a quantum leap in clipboards. There is a principle of physics involved in my Brown Hornet technology that seems to escape the people who knock it off. It was the realization I could incorporate the principle of inverse/square law into the device that I take credit for, not the invention of the materials. Lee Earle's clipboard uses a peel back top layer to reveal the impression inside. That sounds a lot like your methodology and mine, even if the materials used are different. Principle of inverse/square law? Very impressive. And here I thought it was our mutual discovery that a thin magic slate (wax, vinyl or other impression material) receives a better impression because the two magnetic sheets that comprise the "sandwich" are attracted to each other and create a snug seal. Either way, it works well but really, it isn't exactly rocket science. My new synthetic paper "sandwich" used in my Stealthboard Reloaded works even better for my purposes. Your purposes may be different). It is at least 50% thinner than your configuration for a clipboard. For some performers, that's a plus. It may not matter to others and that's fine. To each his or her own. With my devices the impression can be retrieved through up to five sheets of 20# bond paper, although I recommend three sheets, just to be safe. I didn't realize very good results with your small brown hornet through more than one sheet of thin paper, which I consider an unacceptable limitation. (4) I was not unpleasant to Mr. Zust. In fact, I was quite polite but I did call him on his lack of mentalism knowlege and/or ethics. Really? Our emails were cordial enough, but your phone call to me was threatening, or do you not recall promising to "bring the full fury and hellfire of the mentalism community on your (my) head?" At the time, I agreed to include your suggested proviso "In collaboration with John Riggs" to the Stealth Series product advertising even though I suggested the more accurate "in cooperation with John Riggs", since there was no collaboration. You insisted on "collaboration". For the record, I agreed to remove the original Stealth products out of respect to my ongoing and very positive relationship with Murphy's Magic. Also, I don't recall your schooling me on my "lack of mentalism knowledge and/or ethics". Such hubris. Gosh, I didn't realize that my 30+ years as a professional magician doesn't qualify me to use your products or include magic and mentalism demonstrations in my keynote/training presentations. Let's hope there aren't any "mentalists" out there misusing a magician's device like a thumb tip, invisible deck or poorly applying the hundreds of established magic principals/techniques that find their way into mentalism performances every day. By the way, I don't find John's products difficult to use, just different, and in many of my applications, insufficient for my needs. Glad to know your products won't be offered except as a pseudo-underground cottage industry. Which keeps the door open for other talented performers and creators of integrity to offer products to a larger audience. That way, the market will decide if those magic and mentalism products are deemed useful. That's the way it should be in our capitalistic, market-driven society. Rest assured that as long as performers of all stripes (magicians and mentalists and yes, even amateurs/hobbyists) are pleased with my products, they will be offered. Cheers.

Ok, so not wanting to get into the "which came first..." argument, I simply wanted to say that Mark's product satisfied my needs, and I would recommend them to anyone that wants a multipurpose tool that looks like a plain coil-bound pad of paper from Staples. I cannot comment on the "who should get credit for...", but I will say that I had a number of emails about his product, which Mark politely and informatively replied to prior to my purchase - he answered all of my questions, both about method and presentation. It is a device that will allow for a complete presentation, so those who want to carry just a briefcase will want this!
And, trying to compute the odds of independent creation is too much for me - I am simply saddened by the mud-slinging here, whether justified or not. But as far as I am concerned, Mark was a gentleman, and has produced a viable product! Lee |
