Hi All,
I am looking for a Himber upside down pail. I understand that these were made by Danny Dew and later produced by Ted Lesley. I haven't been able to find one second hand, so I am now looking to find someone who would be able to make one for me. Is anybody here capable and up for the challenge, or can point me towards someone with the skills? Many thanks, Ben |

Was it perhaps Harbin who made this? I seem to recall seeing the upside down pail in the two-volume set of his collected works.

Hi Leland,
Nope, definitely Richard Himber as in the wallet and the ring. Perhaps you were thinking of Robert Harbin's Upside Down production box? Ben |

Collector's guard their collection extremely well. One would have to be obtained to see the working and measurements, as it is not published anywhere that I know of. Only making one would be extremely expensive as special jigs would have to be made to fabricate the parts.
I remember when Danny Dew placed an ad in Genii magazine, I sent off a check the same day I received the magazine. A week or so later, my check was returned to me, stating all supplies were sold out. This was before the Internet, but still, that is how fast the collectors react to highly respected craftsman. Heck, we cannot even get a good looking Milk Pitcher made today, with all our advancements in plastics. Nothing as close as the one Richard Himber used in that video. |

You are right about the plastic - but you can make a bucket. I wonder if there are members of the Café - who owns this trick?

Bill my name is my honor. My mail is below. I have stunts - which are several times higher than this price.
I can create a trick - better than the original - I think the price will be about 1500 dollars. This is not a problem for my magic studio. Eugene_Chekhov@yahoo.com ~Eugene Chekhov~

He usually made his items out of the finest metal and sometime solid gold of the time and era. His magic was very expensive for the time it was offered. I will say, it would go for a lot more them $1,500.00, but as all magicians are cheap and usually poor. No one would buy it. At a auction with people that with money, that would go for over $100,000.00. |

Hmm, my friend! I know who he is! THIS IS THE GREAT INVENTOR AND THOUGHT. And of course - his sense of humor.
Ted Lesley - made - a copy is not nearly worse than the original. And it cost $ 1000. of course we can not buy all the antiques.

Himber's stuff in metal was made by Merv Taylor exclusive to Himber. It was many years after Himber had pass and the effect was unavailable, the Ted made his fine reproduction. A reproduction is different from a copy. In my mind, a copy is made when the original is still available.

Himber was extremely clever, I own the prop you speak of as well as several other of his items. At one time I owned quite a few of Merv Taylor props as well....his effects were usually made of chrome and looked stunning. Another clever oldtimer and friend of the above is Joe Berg...I use his Mento Card Box frequently.

Richard Himber's props were very expensive for the 1950's and 1960's. To calculate what the equivalent dollar value today, would be tasking to say the least to figure out. It does not matter what he paid for it, it only matters what it is worth to someone wishing to obtain it for themselves. |

In case anyone is interested... Stevens Magic Emporium has recreated the Himber Upside Down Pail and is offering it (with milk pitcher) for $595:
https://www.stevensmagic.com/shop/himber-upside-down-pail/ I'm a little disappointed that the interior of the pail is painted black. The Himber (Merv Taylor) pail wasn't painted. You can get a close look at an original Himber Upside Down Pail at Steven's site too, they sold one from an estate for $3K: https://www.stevensmagic.com/shop/himber......-estate/ The milk pitcher supplied is a Viking. I have the Viking pitcher and it's a fantastic prop. Mark
