They are more interested as to the magic you do with the coins and not so much if they are real or not. I dare to say they don't care much if at all about that you less you put the concept in their head. It's much more a concern of magicians, mostly just personal bugaboos. I've seen some great looking replicas and some pretty bad looking real coins, and vice versa. Long as they feel good to you and are decent - enough looking, then start working on the magic. Personally of late I've been carrying around a nice set of soft replica Morgans, and I do magic with them for people everyday. Not one person questions them, much like no one ever questions if real half dollars are silver or clad. People are much more into the magic you focus their minds on and the amazement you leave them with. The magic isn't in what kind of coins they are but in what you can do with them.

Thanks MB. I wasn't really worried about people thinking that they were fake. Just a question so I don't end up spending more money then what a coin is worth.

Good point Andy, as no one wants to get ripped off.
A hint to others who may be looking at Ebay for coins: make sure you search worldwide, and not just ebay.com or North America (Look at the left hand side of any search age and you will see a set of radio buttons to set this parameter). This opens up a world of extra choices..literally! Cheers Posted: May 17, 2013 9:14pm This is more or less a related topic question, having to do with coins bought on the world wide weeb (no, that was not a typo!). Looking at buying a couple of simple and relatively inexpensive gaffs such as a flipper, [, etc. I do know enough to want to pick up a Johnson or Tango, but as a former lab geek who has been on disability for nearly three years now due to a rather serious health issue, money is tight. Besides, this is a hobby for me...one which I am fast becomming obsessive, but a hobby never the less. What recommendations can you make for someone as I, looking for as much quality one can squeeze out of a $20-$50 range ? Some of the routines I would love to work on include thru a table or covered glass, the hanging coins routine as done my Roth (or Harbottle...love his moves!), and 3-fly ala David Neighbors - especially like the work with the silver coin near the end of the routine . Came across this -> http://www.ebay.com/itm/C014-1-Close-Up-......6cef903a complete junk, or not bad for the money? Perhaps I should clarify something, my current abilities. Started dicking aroud with basic pamls about 5-6 yrs ago, but then when work was nearing an end for me, I began to be more serious about the whole thing. I spend on average 8-10 hours a day with coins in my hands, while watching television, listening to music, chatting with people, even reading! Heck, I've gone to be and was drifting off when I realized I had two english pennies 'glued' to my palms! So my handling in itself is not bad; I'm quite ready to start stringing moves together into something..... fun! Thanks for your time, and expecially for sharing your expertize. Fwiw, I am a regular on a few other unrelated boards, which is where I recharge my Karma by passing on what I know about three particular topics which I will not go into at this time. Cheers |

Hiya, Shark... Welcome to the Café.
The coin you posted is probably more junk than not as Flippers go, don't even look like a real coin??? Better to try to get one from Johnson's if you want reasonably good quality and value, for this or a shell. There's stuff out there on the cheap, but that's about what it is - CHEAP stuff, just too cheap and it would probably fit (or not fit) properly and handle about that way too. Not good as you would find out soon enough with it. :/ If you had to just get one of these little helpers to play with, I would probably suggest the shell, as there's a lot you can do with it along the lines of what you want to do. An expanded Kennedy shell (half dollar/heads) is probably what you'd want. Johnson and Tango do good work. As to the Flipper, well there's the old kind (which still does the job well-enough) and the newer Gravity Flipper which is the better evolution of the concept now, allows for even better handling and believability. The flipper is a nice gaff as well but I'd still get the shell if I couldn't swing to get both. Also, perhaps to save some $ if it's scarce for you right now, you might check folks here to see if they might have the gaffs you want, and might be willing to part with them for a fair price. Many people here have old or extras of these gaffs they don't use much, and might be willing to part with them and help you out a bit. Good luck moving forward and having fun. -Mb

Hey MB, thanks for the reply, I gladly take your advice and will not buy the cheap flipper.
If anyone has any 'previously enjoyed' decent quality gaffs they are no longer enjoying, I would be interested in hearing from you. Which brings up another related topic: what is the proper etiquette for asking, dealing and purchasing used stuff ? Besides the afore-mentioned gaffs, I am also looking for half and dollar-sized chinese coins, e.g. holed, good quality (not painted washers.. blah blah blah). Once again, thanks for the kind words MB. Coin magic IS a LOT of fun, and this forum is the icing on the cake I'm certain you can all relate to the wonderful feeling one gets when a difficult move is ... I was going to say 'mastered' but that is too strong a word. It's a rush Cheers |

Something MB mentioned has sparked my interest; that perhaps I could pick up the odd used gaff or coin. Looking around the site here I have not found a 'for sale' or market forum, so...
Does anyone have any old gaffs they perhaps bought years ago, and have since upgraded ? If so, please pm me the details. Thanks for reading. Cheers |
