ALL HAIL CHUCK BERRY, king of the 3-chord box pattern.
You can see how old this video is. Keith still looks and talks like a functional human being. |

If you see the whole film, Keith plugs Chucks guitar into a different amp and controls it any way. Chuck does not know.

Forming a band with a guy named Mick Jagger was a pretty good move. Still touring arena's after 50 years. He did something right.

Mr. Richards is an excellent musician. It seems evident that he was not hired into the band to provide a pretty face.

One of the reasons Richards wanted to do this concert was because he didn't like the crummy, slapped together, back-up bands that Berry used all the time. So he decided to be the musical director and put together a band, and a concert, that would do justice to Berrys music. It was really a labor of love, but they butted heads plenty putting the show together.
There is another great part in the movie where, even after all the preparation and rehersal, Berry walks up to Richards in the middle of a song and says that after the next chorus they are going to change keys. Richards just looks at Berry, shakes his head, and mouths the words "NO!" |

Thanks, Marlin. I also thought it was interesting that Mr. Berry says he is most interested in how his guitar sounds to him, in that room, while Mr. Richards is thinking beyond that.

I met Mr. Berry when he performed at an outdoor rock concert in Detroit in 1970. His terms at the time were $1000 when the gig was booked, and $1000 in cash before he went on stage. And you supplied the band. He played with whatever musicians the promoters provided, and expected that they would know all of his hits. I remember that he drove himself in a big yellow car. |

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band backed him up a few times before they were big. They wanted to rehearse etc and Berry would have none of it. They tried to get a set list together and asked "what are we gonna play?" Berry just said "We're gonna play Chuck Berry songs", and that's it. Springsteen said it was terrifying. |
