A Ray Guyll Knucklehead just went up for sale on eBay.
Every time I see Knuck (or a copy of him) a whole flood of memories comes back. I like Charlie & Mort & Jerry, but Knuck was the one who made me laugh hysterically as a kid (in the 1960s). I probably would not have such a strong interest in ventriloquism today if there had been no Knucklehead Smiff. I wonder if any of the figures being used today by any vent will trigger such memories in today's generation of kids. # |

He's a beauty that's for sure. I don't think anyone in Australia has even heard of people like Paul Winchell, Edgar Bergen or Jimmy Nelson.

That is a beautifully carved figure. Everything about it from carving to paint finish is beautiful!
I too loved Knuck as a kid as well as Mortimor Snerd. They were my favorites. |

Just an FYI, I talked with Ray Guyll yesterday and he said it is NOT hand carved in the sense of carving totally from a block of basswood. It is in fact done on a duplicarver. Kenny Warren knows this too but hey you can say anything to try and make a sale. He should have said it is a wonderful wooden Knucklehead made by Ray Guyll. Just as good and truthful. Just saying!!

As beautiful as he is and I know Ray's work is great do you think he's worth 3 grand though?

I could never afford three grand for a display figure, so I will not be bidding as much as I would love to have that Knuck in my living room. It's definitely a true collector's piece! So, the collectors will have to determine whether it's worth three grand. |

I assumed it was hand carved and was in awe.
The duplicarver would explain how he was able to replicate Knucklehead so well. I have never used a duplicarver but have seen them in use. It is still a lot of work and will not duplicate small details which still have to be hand carved. A duplicarver to me is slow and tedious. Even so it is an amazingly wonderfull figure. Mr Guyll is a true craftsman and I admire his work very much. Does Guyll have a website. I know his figures are very sought after and respected and I am curious where he sells them. His figure making book has been very helpfull to me. |

For years we have tried to get Ray to do a web site but he doesn't want to bother with having to pay attention to one. James you are correct about the minor details but as Ray said to me it is not a "hand" carved figure. As far as pricing it is actually a very reasonable price for a wooden figure from Ray. His wood figures run $6000 and up and that is if you could get him to do it for you which today is very hard. I agree it just a shelf piece and even as much as I would love it for the collection I just don't see that kind of money for it. I am sure it will be for sale for quite some time.Ray is now performing with a jazz orchestra, doing the arranging and conducting and playing out so he hasn't had much time for figure building of late.

Well either he reads this forum or someone said something to him because now his description on facebook, on ebay and in the vent cent. marketplace, they all say duplicarved.

Kenny actually emailed and thanked me for letting him know. I guess he really was in the dark about how it was made. I am happy he changed it to read correct as to how it was done.

Ray's paint is just perfect. Wow. $3K for the work of a master in basswood? As the owner of 3 Guylls in the past I would like to quote the great Ferris Bueller. "If you have the means, I highly recommend it."
