Victor the Magician's Opener to HMS Pinafore Overture starts with (following the appearance illusion) the 20th Century Silks:
That was what I was doing as a teenager in the late 1950's.

Excellent Jim !
The first time I have seen sheet music with magical action annotations. Concerning the OP this is the best proof that this routine can be presented to music. Oliver. |

Back in 'Da Day, it involved a lot of cutting and pasting of the physical type. Today it's easier to cut and paste on the computer, but it's essential for timing, once I've chosen the music. The above music is in the public domain, but over the years, "Victor & Company" did pretty much the same act to a variety of different music. The last time, it was to Jule Styne's "Gypsy" overture. Good memories! I had fun!

Yes Jim,
I know that back in time it was common to do so. The only problem is that someone needs to know how to read sheet music. Not a real problem for me and I think a lot of artists in the past knew to do this as well. Overall I think that magicians usually are doing well in an second artistic discipline, like music or dance or acting. Today it's indeed much easier on a computer, but someone still needs to have a feel to rhythm, beat and harmony to do it well so it won't get noticed that the music was edited. Anyway, I'm sure that this was a lot of fun. To me it's as well a fun part to paste the magic action to the music, actually it's one of my favorite parts when I put a routine together. Oliver. |

It works out for me with my Wiz Kids because at the same time they are learning magic, they are also learning juggling, unicycling, and music! I asked Qua-Fiki, who currently plays and reads trumpet music, to look at the above score and play it on a keyboard, and he had no trouble doing so. Then we listened to an MP3 recording of the HMS Pinafore Overture while looking at the music, and while he didn't know my former routine, he knows his own version of 20th century silks and he was able to keep up with the music and act out the trick right on the beat.
He is currently studying how to use a music software editing program (Finale) with Fred Goode (my band director son) and wants to come up with a magic to music routine for himself, using his own original composed music. All it takes is showing them and encouraging them and they take right off and fly with it. The one thing I avoid is telling them that it's too difficult for them to learn or do. Struggle is part of their education. Success or failure is a choice, not a foregone conclusion.

That's great to hear Jim. Good luck to your Wiz Kids.
Concerning reading and transposing sheet music to an instrument I'm very far from Qua-Fiki. I'm glad he's doing far better than I am in this. I know to read sheet-music, but the transposition to my piano is very long, specially if I don't know the piece of music. Maybe I should take more time to study this, because as you said : Everything is possible, if someone takes the time to learn and to struggle. I like your last sentence very much : "Success or failure is a choice, not a foregone conclusion". Oliver. |
