Hello my name is Dev/ and I'm an insomniac.
I refuse to take any form of sleeping pill. I eat three healthy meals, don't drink, don't smoke, nor use drugs(prescription nor street). Stress levels are very low. All of my needs are met and my bills are paid, so I say, Sleep is overrated. I'll catch up on my z's when I die. Is there anyone else here in my IA group? Remember, keep coming back, we have no dues. |

Critter,
We only have one step. "No Sleep!" p.s. We are endorsed by John Testa as well. |

Years ago when I served in the military, I had a good friend who went without sleep to pull other troops' KP for a price of course. He also learned to cut hair at our remote station without the benefit of barbers, and worked his butt off to scratch out whatever he could for a year in the bush, as it were, working every minute he was off duty. The reason I mention all this is that when I used to question him on his lack of sleep in all this, his response was, "Sleep is a disease; we waste a third of our lives with it."
I didn't then and don't subscribe to that now, but if he's happy, then I'm happy. We still are in touch and he is still working at age 69. And Brother, I know that you know, we should allow ourselves eight hours of refreshment and sleep. So, I'm not offering solutions, just things to think about.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Well I do sleep well but I am normally up all night, running a poker club. I am against taking sleeping pills. I know people who they have "hurt" lets say.

You can't mean NO sleep. I don't think that's humanly possible. You gotta catch a couple hours now and then, and for some people that's all they need.

Daryl,
I take a brief 45 minute nap at noon and that is pretty much it. I was up again on fire watch and I'm still here...no worries. |

Find a new friend to sleep with, you do not have to marry her. What you need is someone to hug at 4:00 in the morning. The world is full of lonely women my friend. After my wife died I slept alone quite restlessly for one year then I found an angel to rescue me. Adult men need a female companion. You are starting to worry me now.

Devious,
If I remember correctly you mentioned roughly the same thing years and years ago in connection with RLS, is that part of it? How has the RLS been, I see you do not use perscription drugs so that isn't helping

Devious and I have encountered each other on FB at odd hours, in spite of the fact that we are a couple time zones apart. I need more sleep now than I did a few years ago, but I still sleep like I'm wide awake.

I don't know if I'm an insomniac, but definitely closer to that than a normal person.
I sometimes get in a phase where I sleep only two or three hours at a time, roughly twice a day. Then sometimes those two or three hour sessions drifts into the work day, so I'll have to forego them. Even at the end of those days, when I'm super tired, I'll often only sleep two or three hours. But sometimes I'll crash for like twelve hours. That's awesome. I don't usually mind going like this, but sometimes when I sleep during the day it's hard to focus on work at night. I think this goes back to childhood. I grew up in Las Vegas, from a relatively early age -- like middle school -- I would often get on a schedule that involved coming home from school at, say, 3:00, going to sleep, then being up at midnight. In Vegas, it was possible to have a normal social life from midnight to 6:00, even as a teenager. To be sure, I'm otherwise like Devious: low stress, no drinking, smoking, drugs, etc. |

My father was quite the contrary, he had Narcolepsy or something ... he would fall asleep any time, anywhere.

I'm not sure you have the definition of anonymous Mr Devious. May be you could look it up when the rest of us are asleep?
I don't think I could survive long without sleep - but I'm not convinced about 8 hours a night either. I just read in the QI book and they gave statistics that say that we don't need 8 hours a night.........and in fact longer sleep periods are "bad for us" and life span has gone up as sleep length has come down. Of course statistics can't always be trusted! |

Yeah your darn right there. Sleep = weakness. I could beat the carp (pardon my dyslexia and translocation of letters within words.... ). I can prove it too. You come over and fall asleep .... I beat you up and we see who's beaten up. I can beat the carp out of anyone who is asleep! Of course not a hope in heel of me doing that if your awake though!
