Thanks Hudson and Nicholas - much appreciated. Yeah, I bought some of the Mogar knives - a half dozen full sized and some miniatures. The full sized knives are very well made, but I found that the marbled effect scales (handles) were not as visually striking as the solid colors in the original Merrills - the browns and yellows were quite similar to each other and the quick impression is of the marbling and not of the color.
Also, I really liked the slim style of the Merrills - made the paddle move an absolute snap. The De La Torre minis were so simply made - almost like the 40's and 50's tinker toys or matchbox stuff and cheap like borscht, so you could give one away each time you performed - made a great topper, even to the unexpected appearance of the miniatures. I made a dropper that fit under the front bottom edge of my jacket - like the old cigarette or coin droppers and it worked very well to acquire a fistful of minis with no effort. Phil |

The Smash Climax knives that were used were actually used for gum ball prizes, carnival giveaways, and sold as charms for kid's bracelets. Years ago, Dale and I used to purchase grosses of these small multi-color knives and sell then at the conventions. The manufacturer of these little toys are gone. They do show up under all sorts of names today. So, try using "knife charms" or "toy knife charms". You have to be a detective today to find these little treasures.
There is nothing like the original Merrill Knife to perform almost any "cigarette move" or any of the moves described in Merrill's Knife Book. The Snap Change is a solid showing of the knife. Remember to always show the first color of the knife( no matter what knife you prefer) THREE TIMES. The spectator will have more of a true reaction when the different color "appears". They need time to absorb what you're doing and by giving them a chance to see the first color three times, you will succeed every time. |

Since you can only show the initial color of the knife once before the first color change, what does "showing the first color three times" mean?

I believe these were from spain also, not gum ball machine toys, as they would be choking hazards for children. He also sold knives from Spain, and they were the knives that Juan Tamariz used and sold during his lecture tours of the World. Tamariz also used a small knife with colored dots or strips on them. They were not available through dealers. For a good book on Knife routines, get the World of Knives, still available for only $20. |

Egad!!!
I am still using my old "ENARDOE" (Ed Drane, Chicago) knives. I think they are 60+ years old. For Pete's sake, don't tell anyone! ("They" might come and take away my IBM card.)
