I need a tophat divider that allows me to take cards from a tophat while dumping effects.
I am also interested in suggestions for devices that go on the outside of the tophat - that hold cards, silk or coins ... Martini |

Some top hats have ribbon around the outside fabric and you can usually tuck in a small load in between the ribbon & hat. If yours doesn't, just wrap a folded silk or ribbon around the hat where it meets the rim, and you can tuck in your load somewhere. Not only can you use that load, you can just take the silk / ribbon off the hat, and voila! You have a silk / ribbon.

I have one tip! ALWAYS put the item to the same side/place in the hat that the holder is, it looks horrible when you put an item to the right side of the hat, then move your hand to the left where your load is. For card loads I recommend to put the cards in to a paperclip and pin it with a safety pin to your hat.

Thanks, I'll try the ribbon holder and putting the cards at the exact place my hand will go to get them

This is where reading is important, I believe the cards under hat band is in the Tarbell Course in Magic. It is a very old method, used by many. I was fooled as a young teen by this steal at a local magic club meeting. It was so smooth and convincing it got me into the interest of card manipulations.

Marlo's _Card Fan Productions_ also had the hat band idea.
I always thought a "foo hat" would be an interesting idea. Drop cards (or billiard balls) into the hat and then turn the hat upside down, maybe allowing a silk handkerchief to fall out--as if the cards turned into the silk. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

As mentioned many time, gimmicks and hiding places for steals is solely dependent on your act and how they are used during the act. I have methods for placing things into a hat and stealing a silk for production. There is a way to easily place a TT on your thumb while reaching into a hat. There is methods that Peter Scarlett published in his lecture notes to have items locked into a top hat, for removal at the proper time. Many of these ideas do not allow the hat to be shown empty, but can be turned upside down. Some do not allow the hat to be worn or may get in the way of your other effects a person intends to use with the hat.
The defunct Supreme Magic Co. use to make and sell a spring powered flap that was placed into top hat. I find that none ever come up on any used magic lists. It could be made, but the spring part is difficult to make. |
