These sell for $99.95, but now have been reduced for ALL THREE volumes for only $26.25! First the Jon Armstrong volumes and now these. Maybe a trend? I hope so!
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S15539 Volume 1: - Joshua tips the work on his twelve-minute act, including his Ambitious Card and borrowed ring routines. He's performed this award-winning act all over the world, and now you'll have a peek at the thinking behind it. Also included are performance clips from his acclaimed one-man show, a detailed study of his Discreet Displacement sleight, and a special screening of The Heckler, Joshua's magic-themed short film. Volume 2: - The material on this volume ranges from close-up to stand-up, from easy to difficult, and from cards to coins to ropes to tape measures to bills. But from start to finish, it's all audience-tested and approved magic. Also included are performance clips from Joshua's one-man show, a detailed discussion of practical memorized deck magic (that won't disturb your stack), and a making-of featurette. Volume 3: - Explores Joshua's favorite genre: formal card magic. It's Joshua Jay, a deck of cards, and an astounded audience. The range of effects is equaled only by the range of methods-Joshua uses a clever blend of subtlety, sleight-of-hand, and gaffs for maximum impact. Also included is a detailed study of Triumph, the Bluff Pass, and extra footage of Joshua's gambling exposé, shot in a live theater. |

Wow. The "trend," if that's what it is, is great for the folks that don't have these sets. But what does this mean for the market value of new magic DVD's, when you can purchase classic sets like this one, and now Jon Armstrong's 3-DVD set, for less than the price of one new (and probably not as good) DVD? As a consumer, I love it. Just worried that if this is indeed a trend, it represents further proof of the fundamental devaluing of intellectual property. Not to indulge big picture navel gazing, but IP is one of the last underpinnings of the European and US economies. Obviously magic is an inconsequential contributor, but this same thing is happening to music, movies, books, software, etc.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

Wow... I just saw this on penguin too... As a consumer I love it too...as for worrying about devaluing ??? maybe this will have creators think twice before releasing a $40 or higher product... this is great advertising for penguin and the creators... think about it, if this is someone's first introduction to Jon Armstrong or Joshua Jay and they love the dvd's then that builds loyalty and you will look for more Armstrong or Jay magic , more then likely you'll look for that magic at penguin where you got such a good deal...
hey Acar, any chance of getting Dai Vernon's Revelations - 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Box Set by L&L Publishing for $26.25??? Junior

As with anything, the consumer/market decides everything. If they could get $1000 for a dvd set...they would price it at that.
Some of he Penguin LIVE lectures should be $100. $24.95 is a smoking deal! The Vernon Anniversary set is $140.36. That's the BEST price I've seen anywhere! |

Let's remember, these are much older sets. I think its good business sense, I've never considered purchasing either and I'm almost certain I will pick one or both up next time I buy something from penguin. Good way to move older material.

While Josh's set has been around for a while, Jon Armstrong's set isn't that old. Furthermore, he doesn't have much material out, unlike Josh who's quote a prolific creator and publisher.
Just in case, I checked Malone, Wonder, Guastaferro, Maven and Ammar material produced by L&L. Nothing has changed yet. |

My point is that this is a good way to regenerate interest. Once the buzz fades, how do we maintain interest in a product? In many fields/industries and for many products we run specials, discounts, etc - maybe this is a new trend and it may help more than people realize (if it takes off) |
