All joking aside, David makes a good point: "It's all well and good to say gender doesn't matter, but some generalisations can be made. I probably wouldn't do a poker based routine for a group of ladies and I wouldn't turn a sponge ball into a sponge heart for a group of guys."
That's true. But really, when I'm learning stuff, I'm trying to choose stuff that will work for general audiences. I don't want to carry the poker routine or the sponge heart if I'm not sure I'm going to be able to use it.

Thanks Robert.
I very rarely perform the poker routine as it's not something that particularly suits me. However, its an impromptu trick using an ordinary deck, so if I come across a group of guys who ask whether I use magic to cheat in gambling, then I can perform it. I haven't got round to using my heart yet, but I plan to soon. All of my other routines can play for any audiences, but I would still choose the most appropriate routines to show them. If I was performing for a group of ladies and could only do one set, then I would always open with sponge balls. Guys love them too, but ladies even more so. I also do my silk and coin routine, where one phase is silk through their arm. I know I shouldn't repeat a trick to the same audience, but once I literally had a queue of girls wanting me to do it on them (that was a fun performance!). Of course the routine works well on guys, but no way near as much and they tend to prefer the other phases more. I tend to perform different tricks for my fellow students studying maths than for general audiences. All the stuff would work on all of them, but different people appreciate different things more than others and I don't think there's anything wrong with choosing effects to suit. It's all good magic regardless |

I should probably clarify a little bit. If I'm doing stuff for people I know, I'm going to do very individually tailored material. As you mentioned, I might do different things for my friends in the maths department than for a group at a restaurant or cocktail party.
My perspective is also rather skewed, since my girlfriend (and indeed, most of my female friends) would actually likely be more interested in the poker demonstration than the sponge hearts. But if I'm performing professionally, I don't want to have to worry about carrying different sets for different tables. I have my pocket management worked out a specific way, and in order to carry everything I need, I just need to make sure I do material that's good for everybody. However, I *do* alter my presentations a little bit. It's not about gender so much as the "level" of the group. If I'm performing for a group of college professors, I'll turn the presentation *way* up, and make an intellectual experience out of my set. On the other hand, if the group is so drunk that they're about to fall over, I'll probably just do a couple card changes, a bill change, and move on.

I don't change much at all. Sponge bunnies may get more action but for the most part, my usual material.

"I usually pull out all my sexiest material, use magic to trick them into giving me their phone numbers, and close the whole thing with the sponge ding-dong trick."
Robert, you literally made me laugh out loud. Hilarious. Jon Barr |

I aim to please.
Though I only wish I could say that was entirely a joke--I've seen guys try it (sans sponge dong).

Definitely "French Kiss" by Wayne Houchin. I'm not sure if it is originally his effect but it is taught by him on th art of magic dvd. Great trick.

I love when I get these types of gigs. I usually do the same thing but I'll throw in an emotional effect such as revealing a thought of emotion along with a name of someone who effects them in that type of way, very powerfull and fun. I also like to do pendulum work as well as most women seem to be more into it.
Darren Edit: I just realized this was from July, maybe your still around.

In my experience, women really enjoy sponge balls. When I perform a sponge ball routine, I call them "magic clown noses."

'Lips' by Tony Binarelli.
It is extremely easy to perform and if the patter is good then the reactions will be big!
