Just in case you aren't convinced that Rush is awesome, how about this?
Rush was set to play at the Calgary Saddledome on July 24. As you may know, Calgary suffered a severe flood in late June, with the Saddledome taking a lot of damage. Many people were forced from their homes; the town of High River, just south of Calgary was completely devastated. So Rush, unable to play in the Saddledome, moved the concert 150 km north to the much smaller city of Red Deer, and donated all proceeds from the concert to flood relief. This includes Geddy, Neil and Alex paying all their own personal expenses so that as much relief money as possible would be sent. According to Global News Quote: CALGARY – Canadian rock band Rush has raised over half a million dollars for flood relief in Alberta through their benefit concert in Red Deer.

Sorry but I ain't convinced that Rush is awesome, in fact you would have to pay me a lot of money to go and listen to that crap.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Yeah but you gotta admit even Donny Osmond had more mojo in his left nut than what Beiber could ever hope to have in his entire body.

I think they had 7 semis on the last tour I saw them on...definitely not a small production (we were backstage and the amount of road cases just to fit that drum kit is unreal.) Plus the truck space reserved for the chicken roasters they had on stage. That's a key to any good rock show.
They definitely continue to impress year after year.

Yeah when I saw them they had a girl that would come out onstage every once and awhile with a bucket and a brush and throw some sauce onto the chickens that were all spinning in this giant things on stage.
Then halfway through the set Geddy says "we're not spring chickens anymore, so we're going to take a break" and off they went for a few minutes before coming back and rocking it out some more.

My favorite bands are all British bands but, I do love Rush. G=Frank, I am envious man; I have always wanted to see Rush. I hope they come to Holland or I will move back to the US just to see them.
I am happy they are FINALLY in the Rock hall. Now if Yes, King Crimson, and The Moody Blues get elected, I will be a happy man. |

You have all those symphonic metal bands over there. But Rush is Rush, and Yes is Yes. I was fortunate enough to see both bands this year - very fortunate to get to cover, and photograph, the Yes show. The old guys can show today's spring chickens a thing or to on how to rock.

As a musician I am profoundly influenced by British bands, namely The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Who, Yes, The Moody Blues, etc. And you are right about the great ones teaching the younger bands a thing or two; I learn from them all the time. I saw McCartney last year and this legend plays non-stop for 3 hours not including the encores - all no intermissions. As far as the symphonic metal bands - which is more a Scandinavian thing except for Within Temptation - they don't do anything really challenging at all. I have heard few of them attempt really difficult music like one hears from Rush, Yes, ELP, middle period Beatles, King Crimson, etc. Dream Theater is one of the American prog rock bands that I have a healthy respect for. Chris Squire of Yes is a huge fan of Dream Theater and Dream Theater has paid homage to the greats of rock on a number of CDs. The thing that worries me however is that drummer Mike Portnoy was an integral part of Dream Theater's sound and he has left the band. This is their third personnel change: James LaBrie is there second - and best known singer. Keyboardist Kevin Moore wrote a lot of Dream Theater's material and left and was replaced by Jordan Rudess and the style has changed dramatically and in some instances, Dream Theater lost something special with the departure of Moore. If you want to strike absolute fear into the hearts of most rock cover bands, ask the band to do a Dream Theater cover! So, yes, I agree that American, British, and Canadian proggers could wipe the floor with these symphonic poseurs any day. |
