Zombie Magic Inner circle I went out for a beer and now have 8733 Posts |
Magic.Maddy let me see a clip ( we've corresponded on magic before ). He's a bit older than the last clip I saw of him and he was very skillful then. He's got mad skills know. You don't kneed them for this, but it was just interesting to note how good he's gotten.
This is wicked looking. I'm sure the pdf has the attention to detail he's known for. |

Premise: I've got a free copy for review and I am not associated with Magic Maddy in any way.
The effect is similar to Extractor and this should be clear by this time. The PDF is very clear and the videos are well done. It doesn't have bells and whistles but it's straight to the point and to me this is a positive aspect. As compared to Peter Nardi's version, this one feels more 'impromptu'. You will still need to gimmick the box (duh?!) but the deck can go in the box just before the chosen card. Also a small sleight is required as opposed to E which does most of the work: for this to happen the magician has to square the card against the deck. After that "extracting" the card is easy peasy. Another advantage over E is that the deck can be taken out from the same box and continue with more tricks. PROs: cheap, 'more impromptu', doesn't require gimmick management and over all more practical CONs: the spectator cannot flush the card himself (not a big problem) and a small sleight is required to extract the card. Overall recommended even if you own E. I see this being able to be performed more casually than the Extractor.
I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death my right to say "scr*w you" if you persist. [Voltaire ]

Initial review of Tractor by Madison Hagler
Bias rating: I do not know Madison at all, but did get this as a review copy. Review reliability: I made up the gimmicked box and have tried this a few times in casual settings for friends & family (both with Poker and Bridge size cards), but have not used it commercially. I do own the Extractor by Rob Bromley & Peter Nardi, so was keen to see how they compare. This is not a full review, just my initial thoughts. PDF quality: I only read through this a couple of times as the concept is very simple. I did not notice a huge swathe of typos and the manuscript is written in a clear, functional, easy to read style. There are also YouTube links showing front view, rear view and ‘steal’ close ups. This is a very good thing – PDF authors may be missing a trick if they don’t include helpful videos. Mike Close Workers, Ian Kendall *** Hard Moves, Cameron Francis etc (and now Madison) give extra value and help with the teaching by including videos. Madison does include a main routine idea plus other ideas. The concept: I would relate this to S.C.A.R.E.D. by Jamie Daws, in respect that Tractor is to the Extractor, what S.C.A.R.E.D. is to Spooked by Nick Einhorn. Tractor and S.C.A.R.E.D. allow you to perform pretty much the same effects at a fraction of the cost and with less props, but with a few limitations. The ‘Papercrane moment’ factor: This really is very easy to make up – probably a few minutes at tops with no special / unusual arts & crafts requirements. So what is it actually like to use?: If you are an intermediate-ish card worker, you will have no big challenges here. If you are a beginner, it will take practice to get smooth –it’s not hard, it just needs work to get smooth. I don’t want to describe the bit which needs smoothness as I don’t want to expose the secret. Positives: Can be made up in any card size / brand. Does not use extra pocket space and the box can still function as a box. Never worry about trashing your expensive gimmick. Can also be used as a card peek (as can the Extractor). Fairly easy to do. As Paperinick mentions, you can pull the cards back out the box for your next effect. Limitations / constructive critique: This is not an Extractor, it will not give the same smooth, clean delivery of a card in the same open way… but it could come close with a bit of work. The angles are not as good as the Extractor. You may not be able to use your box for other effects e.g. gimmicked box tricks or card under box (without careful management). Overall: Personally, I would not replace the Extractor with this at paid gigs as I do not have issues with pocket management, and the Extractor is definitely better. But.. if I was not using the Extractor (I don’t use it very often), I might gaff the box just in case I felt like having an ‘extra tool’ available to me. To me, the definite benefit/ main use of this effect, is for day to day casual performances, rather like S.C.A.R.E.D. or if you have serious pocket space issues. I don’t use the Extractor very often, as most effects can be achieved with a clean palm / DPS etc. but there are times when the Extractor and Tractor could really add impossibility and elevate your magic. If you want something that can allow a clean steal of a card for impromptu settings, or else you want to avoid using pocket space for the Extractor, I would have to recommend this. At $10 – 12, if the idea interests you, I highly doubt you will be disappointed – it actually does what the ad copy states, don’t be put off by the simplicity. Charlie PS - This is definitely not a rip off, of the Extractor, not unless every IT effect is a rip off from the original animation effect etc.. |

Whoa Charlie! What can I say?? Thank you so much for taking the time to write that very thorough review! I appreciate it so much.
You make some great points as well. Especially with the comparison to SCARED. That is a great way to think about this. I don't know what else to say besides thank you! I'm so glad you guys are liking this idea and are giving reviews that provide much insight. It's a great feeling Madison |

Hey guys,
So being that I own Extractor, I decided to take a look at this. It is similar to Extractor, but like above, you will need to do a sleight, not too difficult, plus this feels more impromptu. a worthy investment for only $10, good price, for what you get. if you don't want to spend money on the extractor, get this, I think it will get the job done. great job maddy alex

But I believe the effect is “Too Perfect.” This is valid for other effects, including the mentioned Extractor. The method is ingenious and original and is what is really worth in this release. Put the card in the deck, palm it out, reveal it any other way you want. Put the heat on the object used for the revelation and you are done.

Hey guys - just wanted to tell you my thoughts on 'Tractor' by Madison Hagler.
*Full disclosure* While we've never met/interacted in person, me and Madison are friends and have worked together on various projects. REVIEW: Tractor - simply put - is a way of 'extracting' a card from a card box, so you can use/reveal the card at any point of your choosing (among other applications). It's meant to be a cheaper (technically free apart from the price of the eBook) alternative to the Extractor Gimmick. The method itself - extremely straightforward. The kind of method that once you read it (or at least when I read it), you'll go, "That seems a bit... simple." But after constructing it (which takes about 3 seconds), and messing around a bit you'll realise (as I did) that it didn't need to be complicated. Simple = better. As others have pointed out - the box's state throughout might be of concern to some. But basic audience management and routine construction can overcome this. (I personally find putting the box into my card clip under the concept of "more security" adds to the effect whilst cleaning up the dirty aspects of the box) Regarding the eBook - it is clean and to the point. The pictures add clarity without bringing more confusion. (The added url links to unlisted youtube videos are a welcomed bonus to an eBook) The book does suffer from typos and the like, something that could have been easily been handled with pre-release proofreaders. (I do that sort of thing for several magicians friends - I would suggest he should do the same before releasing another eBook) This negative does not ruin the book by any means, but will only be annoying for some people of the "grammar nazi" variety. I'll spare any arbitrary point skills and instead just say that I would personally recommend this for anyone looking to *ADD* to their card utilities. (I stress "add" because I don't personally find this to be fitting for a stand alone piece. It's definitely something that you can cleverly add somewhere in an already existing routine.) If you're looking for a way to simply and easily palm a card out of a card box, without any expensive gimmicks are fish handlings, this is your thing. Conclusion: Recommended.

I've had a couple PMs about this so I guess I need to make this a little clearer:
Yes there IS a gimmick, but not with the cards. The box is gimmicked in a very simple way. I thought that was clear but I guess not. Hopefully this helps those deciding! |
