Worked at a train show this past weekend. Lotsa kids. One family: Mom and 2 kids watched the demo. Finished, Mom said, “You can either have the cards or the train.”
Have no idea what the train cost but no train is cheap these days. One wanted the train, the other wanted the cards. Neither kid would change his mind. I frantically tried to figure a way to make sure I got the sale. Finally I said, “OK, I’ll cut the deck so no one has any idea what card is on top. I’ll deal each of you a card. The guy with the higher card wins. Now, we both know that one of you will get the KC and the other a different card. Might be higher, might be lower.” They both said, “OK.” “In fact, just to make it fair, so NO ONE knows what’s on top, EACH of you cut the deck, then I will cut it.” Of course, it didn’t make any difference even if one or both of them didn’t cut properly because I got last cut. And since the key card was on the top, the chance of anything being higher was pretty remote, although there were 2 aces in the deck. I dealt the key card to the kid who wanted the deck. The other one, a loudmouth, buck toothed freaky looking character got a 6 and they bought the deck. As a consolation, I gave each of them a TCM, so the buck-toothed kid was semi-happy. Can anyone think of a better way to have done this? Jon |
