Here is what I did step by step to get over 200 "likes" (so far).
Go see me at https://www.facebook.com/ProfessorQB and give me a like if you want to. 1) Started posting interesting pictures having to do with performing. (Lots of smiling kids, interesting balloons, local places). 2) Got business cards like Michael Carducci's card here. 3) Put a secret word on my Facebook page like Buster Balloon does. You can see what I did here. 4) Ask parents to give me a "Like" and tell the kids I have a secret word on my page and if they will tell me the secret word next time they see me I will give them a special prize. The prize is this. A lot of you have way more than 200 likes and that is great. I just wanted to share these four do-able steps that get the right people in my target market to "like" my Facebook page. Hope this sparks some ideas for you so you can improve your Facebook marketing.

But, I work a couple of restaurants and the people who follow me on Facebook come into the restaurants to see me. The managers know that so it helps me keep those gigs. In addition, they tip better. I think it is about building a relationship with me. I'm not just "the clown" I am "their clown" who they feel a personal connection to. Facebook can do that. It is designed to build social networks (duh!) and it is up to us to make that pay. Of course, if I were to try to get gigs ONLY from Facebook followers I would be waiting a long time between paychecks.

Well done Professor.
I can see where having a lot of likes, especially local ones, could be a very good selling point to the restaurant. Tom

TARGETED "likes" on the other hand are incredibly valuable. You need to build an organic relationship with qualified fans. The difference is conversion. You can have a million-dollar sign but if it's sitting in the desert it does your business no good. A fan is worth an estimated $174 to business. My question is what good is a fan if they don't do business with you? And remember, I'm not talking about a Facebook friend (on your personal page) but a fan for a professional page. |

This is more along the lines of my thoughts and perspectives. Just getting a large blanket of lines seems unproductive to me (professionally, business-wise) other than maybe personal gratification or ego. It to me is about targeting and conversions. This I can see.

You can separate your fans into groups. This way, you can post status updates that are relevant to that specific group. Group your fans that are in real estate, group your fans that are involved in the restaurant industry, etc. Another thing is to try and target a niche market rather than being all over the board with your services. Some will say it's nice to offer 10 different services but than your message (IMO) is lost. Your brand has now become confusing. While some look at variety as a good thing, others view it as a weakness. Some magicians wonder why they aren't getting booked for gigs for the corporate trade shows while they're pitching children's events for $100. If you look at most professions such as law or medicine, they have very specific fields. I'm not saying that by offering both children's shows as well as adults shows is going to hurt your business but for some it might. I try to ALWAYS connect with my fans while at events. If they happen to take a picture sometime during a trick I say, "be sure to tag me in the picture" and then I give them my card with my FB page on it. I try to have them tag the location as well. this way, if it's at a restaurant, the restaurant's social media team (most of the time the manager) will see that there is engagement taking place on their news feed and I'm doing something extra to promote that business. The point I'm getting at is that you are gaining REAL fans and not just people that are your friends or piers. These are people that will likely hire you for an event. As opposed to "boosting your posts" or buying FB ads, the more impressions you can get in your fans news feeds, the more exposure you will get in return. This is why it's important to ENGAGE on certain posts. The more likes, shares and comments you can generate, more and more people will see it. This is based on Facebook's "Edge Rank" algorithm. However, if you DO decide to buy ads through FB, be sure and target your groups. You might only land 20/100 but those 20 are the ones that will do business with you. I should point out that by doing the custom fan pages for my clients, this gives them a HUGE advantage over the rest of the field because they can now offer promotions, contests and other lead generating results from those pages. By putting up a fan gate on a contest you can build a HUGE amount of fans. Imagine offering a contest that give them a chance to win a special offer. You can take a chapter out of Groupon's playbook and say "Share this to get 50% off your next event" or "Share this to learn a free trick". The only catch is that it has to be shared a certain amount of times before the deal is considered valid. So set a target goal of 50 shares. When they click "Share" it will appear on their news feed. Remember though, Facebook has VERY STRICT guidelines when it comes to promoting contests or giveaways on your actual news feed. However, services like mine allow you to do it within FB's terms because you're going through a third-party application. Any questions? |

Great analysis as always Mr.Eaton!
my experience of using facebook as a way to engage your fans and a tool for them to hire you is to know the Demographic of your clientele. I've gotten inquiries thru my Facebook fan page before, but notice that a lot of more affluent clients don't use Facebook as they like to be more private from the general public, and the younger generations are moving to twitter when I get inquiries for a college gig
