Has anyone had success adapting effects to play well on the radio, during an interview? A lot of magicians have taken the route of performing for the DJ in hopes their reactions will translate to those listening, but what about effects that can be performed in this environment and actually wow the listeners at home?

I was on radio a few times and I only did stuff that involved choices and they got radio listeners on the line for that. 'Looks' like they change the outcome even if they are far away. The Dj's only role is to confirm that everything is fair, describe what's happening and confirm the outcomes with reactions.
Nothing visual because I think it frustrates listeners.

I have some you can do from your home with the DJ or the listeners on line or the phone. Smile

What is stapleton?

There are radio DVDs available to purchase on Radio Magic Tricks. Most if not all are mentalist effects. Just go to a website like www.penguinmagic.com and enter radio in their search engine, several will magically appear for you to chose from. You can do more searches on other websites. Also look up Dunninger, he was the master at radio magic in the old days of radio. He has book or 2 available to the public.

Banachek wrote a booklet on radio magic and I believe it was called Radio Magic. Slim King who posted that he knows radio magic does indeed know some. I would ask him for some advice on this matter.

Thanks Chad!!! The Compendium of Radio Magic is on the way ... My daughter The Bean will be helping market it. She did radio shows with me for over a decade now and has a fresh look at how radio magic effects the current listening audience. I will try to post some of her LIVE performances at Universal Studio's in addition. Smile

I've never done magic on the radio but I have presented shows for over 15 years. So from a purley radio point of view, a few things that might help are:

Remember you are talking to one person - the person listening
Be overly descriptive in everything you do
Speak slowly. It will sound odd to you but normal to the listener

Thinking purley on my feet mentalism would seem the best thing to do on the radio however radio has seen Vent acts and Jugglers on before and if handled correctly can still be entertaining.
Beware of dramatic pauses, In the UK anyway a number of stations have emergency playout systems that kick in after a set amount of silence. Most are set at 20-30 seconds so you would have to be pretty dramatic to trigger it but I thought it worth a mention.

Anyway that's my 2 cents.

Juan Tamariz has a book called Verbal Magic it is all effects he developed for this type of performance. There's some really great stuff in it.

So, just ran across this post and have my first radio spot for my next show in a week. Anyone have success with any Juan Tamariz effects from Verbal Magic? Thinking they would play great with the audience. Just wondering what experiences others have had.

I do magic on the radio fairly regularly. I've found that as long as you really describe in detail what you're doing, you can perform just about any trick. People love to use their imagination, and if you have a good, responsive volunteer, you're all set!

I posted a few radio appearances to give you an idea of my approach. Hope this helps.
