Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I would get a set of linking rings re-plated? I have a set of Abbott rings--I think they were called "featherlite" "feather-weight" or "feather-something"--that I got back in the 70's. I imagine it would be a little tricky getting them replated, especially for the two chain rings sets.
If they can't be completely replated, can anyone recommend a good touch-up chrome paint or some-such alternative? ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

To be honest, And you will hate me for saying this, but at this point it would be better to get a new set of rings. Although I've never plated myself, but my metals teacher in high school has and he says it can be a pain in the butt if they are linked together. I had the same issue as you, then I realized it was smarter to buy a new set. I use Owens 12 inch with a locking k** and I love them. Since they are not plated you can polish them with any metal polish and it will restore them.
Worth the investment. There is also proline that are about half the price as Owens, but I no experience with proline Good luck |

No, I don't hate you for saying that. I figured it would be, as you said, a pain in the butt to re-plate the linked rings.
I do in fact have two or three other nice sets of rings, including a Ring 'n' Things set. It's just that the Abbott set was my first professional set after using the Royal set that I bought when I first started in magic. The Abbott rings were also a gift from a friend who never used them much, and consequently I have a nostalgic attachment to them. I could also do a variation of the "blooming flower" move that allowed me better control than a regular set of 8-inch rings did. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

All you do is find a automobile bumper chrome shop. Dick Stoner had his small set of Rings & Things original re-chromed locally. I have no idea how much it cost. They have to remove the original chrome and re-plate them.
The chrome process is a 2 step process. Usually the metal is coppered or nickeled and then chromed over the nickel. |

Bill is correct in that it is a two stage process. It first must be copper or brass plated. The copper formula is a cyanid based formula That is one reason I try to machine in brass to avoid this step.
Find a local stop and try to take to the guy about doing it. It must be a hard chrome. Offering cash and no rush is usually the key to a lower price. Richard

Thanks for the comments, Bill, Richard and Elliott. There's no real rush at all about getting the re-plating done, so I'll take my time. The rings are back in Virginia and I'm in Florida right now anyway.
