So what's the end goal of cardistry? Most of what I have seen looks like fumbling about with a deck of cards...like the following:

Dale, it's okay. Most of us aren't.

When I perform on the streets of NYC, I use flourishes to get people to stop and watch, then pull them in for a trick. I found that asking people if they want to see a trick makes them close off. Cardistry sparks their curiosity, and legitimizes me, then I pop into a routine with or without cards.

Neemdog, Could you please let us know what flourishes you use or suggest to "pull them in"? I do Marlo and Hamman type effects, so it'd be really nice to use some flash to draw attention.

Sybil type cuts tend to get the most attention for me. Probably the easiest attention grabbing flourish is springing the cards due to the sound and the fact that most lay people associate that move to being very skillfull with cards.

I own their Trilogy, and it's packed with material. I also really liked the flourishes in the Cardistry video Daniel Madison put out at Ellusionist. Sometimes, if I'm feeling too nervous to do stuff like that, or if it's colder and I've got stiff fingers, I'll just do fans and spring the cards. You don't have to do it long before getting some attention, and you'd be surprised to find how impressed people are with a fan in each hand just swirling around. |

If you use a stacked deck or any type of setup, I have a handful of flourishes that are full deck retention cuts that are featured in Subtle Concepts: The Second Installment DVD. You can use the flourishes to draw people in while keeping your stack intact for when they ask to see a trick.
