Tony,
There is a lot of information and opinions about Facebook under the Tricky Business forum if you search there. But I will give you my opinion about Facebook as an advertising & marketing professional for the past 24 years. Facebook is not unlike many other forms of marketing. Your success is dependent on how you present your message and how you work it. Of course the biggest advantage of FB is that it is free! But you can't set up a page and expect it to work for you if you don't put some time into it and keep it fresh and current, along with continuous solicitation of fan Likes.

So what is the secret to generating business from FB? You must start out with an interesting page with pictures and helpful information. If you have a website, you can drive them to it with a link. Asking previous clients to like your page early on and making favorable testimonials will be helpful as well. Where you must put some time into it comes with soliciting people to Like your page and building a large network that will hopefully help you to grow your fan base. Adding fans outside of your performance area may look good for the number of likes you have, but won't do as much good for picking up business. Any printed materials you may produce should promote your Facebook page and don't forget to mention it anytime you perform.

As you build your network, you need to continuously post information and photos about your performances and don't miss the opportunity to promote any public performances as well. The effectiveness of generating business is highly dependent on the quality of your fan base, but even those fans that are not good prospects to hire you can be valuable in promoting you to others by word of mouth.

Facebook allows you to give a unique, ongoing look at what you have to offer, unlike any other advertising media. You can spend thousands on tv, newspaper, billboards, etc., but they are so much more limited in what message you can present. Of course those means of advertising can be effective too, because they reach a large number of people. But that's where the work comes in for you. You are only limited to the number of people you reach by how much work you put into soliciting fan Likes (and, of course, the number of people that are on Facebook in your area).

Do a search here on TMC like I mentioned earlier and you will find some good information that will be helpful. You will also find opinions from those that believe FB is a waste of time! It probably doesn't work the same for everyone, but everyone doesn't put the same time and interesting photos & information on their page either. One thing I believe everyone can agree on... the price is right!

I would say #1 is tell people you have a FB, #2 create a FB page that's different from your personal page and than to update it at least 2-3 a day. Make sure that the content is relevant to your market. The other thing is look up Mari Smith and Peter Guber. Mari Smith is a social media expert and Peter Guber has a fantastic book out called "Tell to Win" he shows you how important it is to CONNECT with people which is the point of social media... Hope that helps.
