Hello everyone, I am a sort of new magician, in the sense that my preforming career is still in the process of lift off. I am a collage student who loved magic growing up, and now I'm taking the steps to kick it up a notch and start a career. At least in the summer when Im not working like crazy at school. I come from the small vacation town of Saugatuck Mi, and am the only performer, that I know of, anywhere in the area. I think magic as an art form is something that the town could use and people would enjoy.
Crowd control, mentality, and psychology are topics I enjoy talking about, not to mention the always important entertainment factor. As far as magic, close up and cards are areas I dable, however, I am always looking for spur of the moment effects with everyday objects. Unfortunately I've hit a snag. I'm at the point were "magic tricks" like the ones your uncle dave preforms after drinking a few isn't enough to learn. I want to surpass them and really bring out the art that stays with people for a lifetime after seeing a show. However, the magic industry now a days, I feel, has changed. The whole image of "rock star instant visual magic" to me makes it hard for families, spectators, and groups of all ages to approach you. Sense entertainment of spectators is the goal of the magician this is a paradox I don't understand. It may be just me, but I miss the classics and the atmosphere they brought. I would greatly appreciate any tips in how to preform that magic, or at least where to look. If anyone wants to hit me up to chat I'm cool with that too. Im not a hater of other magic by the way. As long as you take a person out of reality for a moment and let them feel wonder in the they way they did as a child watching a coin disappear and reappear behind an ear, your alright in my book. |

Mormo Zine has a great point. They're classics for a reason. My uncle lives in Portage, used to live in Kalamazoo. I grew up in Columbus, OH. With that said, welcome to the Café and go Buckeyes!

I too prefer the classics. There will always be a place for them. I wonder if, as magicians, we can tire of the classics and always look for 'the new' because we become over exposed. But for our spectators (who don't think about magic everyday) a good egg bag routine is the most astonishing thing they have ever seen.
Stick to what you love. |

Hey Brother- the classics are a classic for a reason. They never go out of style. And if you like performing for kids - God is always making new ones so there is always a fresh audience for the classics. You can mold those to fit your character too- you are not stuck in a routine like many off the shelf tricks.
I like new innovative tricks - but for me it's all about the classics. Making those rings melt thru each other. Where did that ball go? Where are all those coins coming from? Find the tricks you love and love to perform and the audience will love them. |

Welcome Cortal5,
I'm hardly a Rock Star and lots of people enjoy my Magic. I might not change lives but I do make for some happy memories. Sometimes that is enough. I do a lot of classics and I try to make them my own. If you enjoy the Magic you choose to do the audience will respond better, so do what seems Magical to you. -Mary Mowder |
