Stanyon. I can't believe you don't know what new branch of magic David Blaine opened up !
He showed the world that you can be in a coma and still perform magic. |

It seems to me that no matter who you are, someone somewhere will make fun of you or criticize you. Case in point, I have seen a few television shows where they made light of, NOT David Blaine, but Copperfield.
You know, they mocked his blow dried hair look, and his vocal mannerisms, etc., But I think we as magicians should all be allowed to be ourselves, and if that means being different, then so be it. I believe this is called originality, something which I've always heard is very important in your magic. Wasn't it a very famous man who once said "He who is not against us is for us?" Anyway, there is no such thing as a perfect magician. I'm sure that Blaine would be lost in Copperfields venue, trying to present a large illusion show on a stage, but on the other hand, let's see how David would do if you put him in front of the crowd in Harlem or Chicago's South side. You see what I'm saying? We all have our particular talent and abilities. We all have a venue where we fit best. Can you compare apples to oranges? What is REAL magic to people in the real world? Some swear by Blaines "in your face style" They consider it "miraculous" because he has the guts to do it under your nose, without beautiful assistants, fancy expensive props, million dollar budgets and illusions. No trap doors, no smoke and mirrors, just plain raw magic with cards and coins, etc. These people consider Copperfield a fake, and Blaine the genuine article. Now on the other side of the coin, there are folks who think you are not a real magician unless you can make a jet airplane vanish. But it just keeps getting bigger and bigger every year, with these guys constantly trying to out do themselves and one another. When will it all end? People tire of it. They belive that with a million dollars they could replicate these things. What I'm saying is this: Every one of us is Human. None of us performs authentic miracles. We are ALL trying to impress our audience in the best way we can. That's our job. Why criticize any of our fellow conjurers because we don't like their style, skill level, venue or whatever. Can't we all get along and love each other for the talent that each individual has been blessed with? Why is that so hard? There is Some one looking down on us who could EASILY find fault with each of us, and in living color with precise details, to boot. But He doesn't. This is Christmas and I think we each need to re evaluate our attitude toward our fellow magicians and do a good soul search on ourself. And that's my two cents.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

And since in his first special, he mentioned how he was against stage illusions - even if he his a millionare today he can't do any stage illusions just so he won't lose his 'integrity' as a 'street' magician.
I would, however contest that there is in REALITY very little pportunity to perform what could actually be termed "close-up" magic.
