If I am thinking of the right lazy magician, it is a card trick. how would you recommend I perform it on stage.

Take $10, buy a video on rope magic from Aldo Colombini, grab a rope, some scissors, and perhaps a ring/bracelet. I think I just saved you a few thousand dollars!
If you have a big stage to fill you don't necessarily need a big prop. When I was at school, and in a talent type show, I did a sponge ball routine. Too small? Yup. But it went okay. So next time I did the chinese sticks. MUCH better. You could fit those in a back pack. But with thought, practice and patter they'll happily entertain for 3-4 minutes. |

Thank you Wravyn!
Now, I'll have to buy a bigger hat! I grew up in a SMALL town in Northern Michigan, far from other magicians. I read all I could (there weren't that many books available, and TV didn't "begin" until I was in the Navy in '51) and saw as many magicians as possible. (not very many!) I soaked up all the information that I could from school assembly magicians and circus side show magicians, etc. I was fortunate that everyone I met was helpful, and very willing to share information. So, now I just try to "give back".

Look up Andrew Mayne, he has very inexpensive products that teach what you're looking for and how to make them almost at no cost

The effect is visual, the props are visible, the effect is versatile, the effect is angle proof, there is no set up, no table is needed, the props are recognizable, the props pack small, and the effect plays big, and the effect is spot adaptable. WHAT MORE CAN YOU ASK? PROPS NEEDED: WAND OR CANE, 2 15 FOOT PIECES OF ROPE (NYLON SUGGESTED) 6 24" or 36" silks (could use ladies head scarves from a thrift shop!) Can use own assistants OR two girls from audience. Running time approximately 5 minutes, but is flexible. I'm quite sure that there is a tape on you tube with John Calvert presenting it--but I don't care for the way the assistant puts the ropes on the cane.

TARBELLL Volume FOUR ----page 357... CORDS OF PHANTASIA ("English" spelling of FANTASIA)
To "fill the stage", use 2 TWELVE FOOT LENGTHS OF ROPE. Nylon, at least 1/4" diameter (1/2" is more visible) any color. Suggest silks (or ladies head scarves of nylon or polyester) solid colors preferred and at least 24" size. The LAZY MAGICIAN PRESENTATION: Center stage is a chair (for the lazy magician to sit upon). Invite two girls from audience to assist. One stands at your left, the other at right. Follow Tarbell's instructions. Each girl is holding one rope at ends. Take the two ropes from girls and hold both at centers. Hand wand to one girl. Mention that you will mark the exact center of ropes. Tie ropes around wand as Tarbell says. Hand each girl the "apparent" ends of "two" ropes. Have girls stretch the ropes out by backing away from each other. The 4 (or 6 if you like) silks are on your lap. With hand motions "beckon" LEFT girl to come toward you and RIGHT girl to move away. Tie a single knot with silk around ropes near wand. Now, beckon RIGHT girl to come toward you and LEFT girl to move away. Tie a silk on rope on other side of wand. Continue until all silks are tied to ropes. With your hands signal girls to move left and right until the wand is in front of you. Ask each girl for one rope end. Using them tie a single overhand knot and hand the ends of ropes back to girls. The overhand knot has caused the silks to bunch up at wand. Now you say that you need the wand and remove it and wave wand over silks immediately. Silks will fall to floor -- or--you can grasp them all as you remove the wand and you'll be left holding silks in one hand and wand in the other. Stand and STYLE! (Don't bow--style!) Thank girls and dismiss. Tarbell's patter is ARCHAIC! I suggest do it in pantomime with music.

I have the Tarbell as an e-book, all the volumes in one, but I still didn't find it, does this mean I was ripped off? thanks for spending the time typing it up though.

Egad! (I was born too soon!!!) When I went to school we had BOOKS (!) with real paper pages inside! etc.
I have no experience with 'e-books' "Nada" Zilch" etc. Are you able to understand my "technical writing" (above)?? If I am too obtuse (this is a public forum) PM me, with your home address. I'll Xerox the appropriate pages of Tarbell and mail them to you. Tarbell doesn't give you the Lazy Magician presentation, but it will give you the (illustrated) method. Like all good magic principles, IT'S VERY SIMPLE! From Wed. AM (Oct. 30)to evening Friday (Nov. 1) I'' be at the Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee, WI. I'll bring along this "infernal electrisch peckenclacker", but I may not have WIFI. When is the date of your student talent show???

Are you still working on this? A sword basket just sold for $50 on SME. You need to decide on what direction you want to go and get yourself some props.

I may be wrong but I think there is version of the sword basket in the cartons book I mentioned earlier. I have seen it done with cardboard box (carton )and sharpened wooden dowels - even less than $50.
As for Tarbell, I too have an electronic version "the original correspondance course" or words to that effect. I couldn't find the Cords of Phantasia reference either but there is a cords through jacket effect in lesson 7 and I wondered if this is a different application of the same method. (I don't know). Best wishes, Danny |
