I received a review copy from Rus. Having said that, I do not know Rus personally and I only know him from his interactions here on the café.
"Enemy at the Card Table" was discussed here around 2 years ago. It garnered a lot of interest back then; and rightly so. But for my thoughts, I will go in the order proposed in the manuscript. Disclaimer: I cannot comment on the novelty of the effects as some sound very simple in method that someone may have already published them. I trust Rus did his research. My review is based on the effects as I read them in the manuscript provided by Rus. Zilch: Ok, another ACAAN, and it meets the Open Prediction plot. And add a kicker to that. Reading the that made me feel a bit skeptical. But reading that Rus uses it as a closer piqued my interest. Let me say that this routine kills indeed. What I love about this routine is that it all makes sense. And it looks fair. The 'twist' is unexpected at all. I can say this much: it is a spin-off from his highly acclaimed routine Numbers. But it has beautiful subtleties and ruses that makes this routine so powerful. The only con I can think of is that it will require another deck which can easily be switched in during an act or used a standalone effect. Box Cover: The effect is a variationon Zilch. It contains a neat presentational idea that I will incorporate the concept into another routine. It adds nice comedy and anticlimatic moment that do deliver a punch before the surprise. Envision: Yet another variation on Zilch. It is actually more of Zilch in reverse. I am not a big fan of this variation. It is a bit of a stretch and I find the original version the most direct. Enemy At The Card Table: The routine that started it all. Yes, it is very simple and delivers a punch. It is not hands-off (a condition that was later taken out for reasons dating to couple of years back) but it is super clean. I have to say that it is best suited for people who are knowledgeable about poker hands. But with today's poker series, that should be a little problem. One last point, if one is familiar with the work of Bob Hummer (namely, Tsunami), then one can recreate a completely hands-off version of this effect. And Rus adds how one can take the basic effect further. Catch: This is a disappearing and reappearing signed card. It packs a nice surprise. I would not personally perform it on its own. But as part of a signed card routine, I may add it. I can see that spectators will be shocked at this conclusion of the effect. The structure of the routine builds the impossibility in the eyes of the spectators. And when they think the effect will begin, the conclusion hits them between the eyes. Quartet: Rus thinks that many will dismiss this effect as weak. I think the premise is powerful one. The premise reminds of TnR by Bich without the restoration. Of course, the effects have nothing in common in terms of method and overall presentation. The rhythm will take some practice. I feel this type of routines can be taken out of the realm of playing cards to deliver some interesting message. Conclusion: It is a very interesting combination of concepts. I know I will be using Zilch and Enemy at the Card Table. Very simple yet very powerful. It was a surprise that Rus brought it back into circulation. I personally missed it the first time around. I am not sure how long it will be around this time. Great job Rus. |

Enemy at the card table is a simple but fantastic idea. I will definitely be using this effect. It can play by itself or easily fit in with other routines.
Zilch contains is a great concept that can be used to create strong effects. These two effects are powerful, practical, and worth your attention.. |

If you missed Zilch the first time, now is the time to jump on this. I have purchased many of Rus's effects. I love his outside the box thinking. His effects (and especially the material in Zilch) are the type that doesn't simply amuse the spectator but gives them a lasting memory of you. And to me that is what its all about. Well worth the money.
