Probably wouldn't be good to let them or the parents know ahead of time that you plan to use them with every routine in case things get ugly. I think it will always be a challenge to kid show entertainers to be able to recognize when there are kids in the audience that will get upset when they aren't called upon to volunteer. Having everyone in the audience engaged as much as possible throughout the show may help, but doesn't always satisfy everyone. |

Wow I would never want to use the same kid in every routine.
some of my routines only work with girls and some with boys. some with dads and some with moms i could not use the bday kid in every routine. i think its a show killer to use the same kid all the way thru. first I think it would make all the other kids think "i am never coming to billy's birthday party ever again. he is the only one that gets to have fun" i think you also lose potential biz. that one kid you picked for that funny routine went home and begged mom and dad to have mr magician at his birthday party. that is not happening for you if you only use the birthday kid now to answer your question- siblings- if mom wants me to use them I might, if they fit the bill, but usually all I will do with them is bring them up and do a quick funny bit with a balloon and make some thing fun for them and pointing out that they are the birthday kids brother of sister. some times I bring them up and pretend they are the birthday person and they say NO that's my brother. I say well then your the birthday brother and we should do something with you. then do the balloon bit. other times right away I can tell there is no way I am bringing up the siblings. I explain to mom and dad that for the show to work I need to pick the kids that will work with the routines I have. its my show. I want to have a great show every time therefore I need to make sure I have the right kids for the right routine. it comes down to educating your client as to what is best for the party. there is a reason I set up here and not there. a reason I wont perform outside a reason I need to have the coffee table moved out of the room a reason I don't allow pets in the same room I am performing (gold fish are ok) a reason I have the kids sit on the floor X feet away from me a reason I have the birthday kid in the middle of the show a reason why I do what I do - because after thousands of shows I have learned what works and what doesn't. and it is my job to make sure I convey that to mom and dad so that they can have a spectacular party with all the moms and dads and kids having fun. but this is just my opinion. sam

Sorry, just ran across this thread and thot I'd put a couple cents in.
Let's not forget...our job is first and foremost, to make the bday kid happy! Today he/she is the most important kid in the whole world. Our job is to create that feeling in them. As David Kaye says, "tell the other kids, when I come to YOUR party, you can be....." Brilliant marketing strategy that works everytime. Also, try to eliminate as many 'conditions' as possible. Be easy to work with. Word will get around. Just some thots. 'unc.
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and that's usually good enough to make a decent living.
