Just wanted to say hi to Tom. We met only once, a few years ago at a WMS in Vegas. I truly love your 3 ring routine done to poetry. I've always had a soft spot for such routines. I do torn and restored cigarette paper to the closing soliloquy from A Midsummer Night's Dream. Can you talk a bit composing poetry to fit a piece of magic?

Howdy Tom:
Could you please talk a little about the width of the key ring? I know a Magician whom I won't name, who uses a key ring that has about a 3" "key". Most everyone I talk to says the "key" should be about the width of the rings but the Magician I know who uses a very large "key" does a very nice job of linking the rings, even close up. I don't do the rings at this time but I want to get a good set and I would rather have my key ring set at the factory, not adjusted by me. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I must ask anyway. Iven

Pepka, I did not write the Poetry for the Linking Ring Routine. Both the brilliant routine and the poetry were created by Jack Millier. I love the tone and texture of the routine. It has served me well for many years!

Iven,
I use a giant gap in my Key Ring. There are two reasons for this, 1) The routine origionally called for an oversized Key Ring. There are phases of the routine where the key is switched in the hand by simply going over another ring. There is also another point in the routine where the is a silent penetration of the rings. The larger gap helps in this process. Key rings are a very personal thing. Some people like a big gap, some a smaller gap. It's OK to stretch the gap apart to the size you want with a new set, that's the way most people have done it forever. There is another option that Cellini told me about. He warned that by stretching the ring, you compromise the shape of the circle. He always recommended taking a jewlers saw and cutting the ring to create the size gap you want. He also had some interesting advice as to how to determine the size of rings to use. This advice came directly from Slydini (Cellini's Mentor). He said, that the size of your rings should be directly proportional to your height in your final display. If you do an 8 ring routine and you show a chain of 8, it should be roughly as tall as you. This might mean 8-10 inch rings. I do a 5 ring routine, so to create this pretty picture; I use 12-15 inch rings. So that my final diplay is as tall as me. Make sense? |

Hey, Tom! I started out doing the Jack Miller Routine when I was a kid, and my own routine is largely based on one segment of his routine. I have always used an oversized key and it just seems easier for me to move the opening from the thumb back to the heel of my hand for the different links. It also is good for silent moves, as you said.

Tom, you were the Magician I was referring to. I was shocked to see such a large gap and when you linked and unlinked the rings right under my nose, it was pure Magic.
Thank you for your help Tom. Iven

Hi ya Pop! Very interesting that you and I were the only ones to make heads or tails out of the Miller Booklet (It was horribly written). It really is a fantastic routine, as is yours! I did not know that you used an oversized key in yours as well. Certainly opens up some interesting options, magician fooling sequences where you swap the key out for the single.
Iven you flatter me. The rings ROCK!!! Many magicians feel that they are cliche. I strongly disagree and feel that there is a reason that the classics ARE just that. |
