So I saw a tutorial on the Muscle Pass.. I understand that it's a very very advanced technique but I feel like I'm wondering aimless or something. I feel that maybe I'm not doing it correctly.. I've watched this tutorial on youtube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YKp3yvwLco ) following it to the best of my ability.. I started initially with a half dollar for about 45 minutes, then I moved to a poker chip and with it for about 2 hours I got up to maybe an inch and a half high, maybe one or two at 2 inches. I switched back to the half dollar for the past 20 minutes or so and I feel like I've started from square one.. cant do anything other than flip the coin over, no air. It's really a let down. Anyone know any good youtube tutorials? Or maybe it just really takes that much more time. I'm willing to put in hundreds of hours of practice, it's just that it's hard to keep moving forward when you don't see any progress at all.. In-fact feeling like I've moved a few steps back. I see a lot of potential for the muscle pass when perfected and I really want to master it. Any advice or tips? I'm 16 years old, no job currently so I don't have money to just go buying books.. I need free e-books or youtube videos, etc. Thanks ! Getting some good info from this site so far, it's great. Just that a lot of people end up saying to go buy a book. :S

Actually the video is pretty good. The muscle pass can take months or years to perfect. You have to train your muscles to do this and that takes time, practice and patience. If I am reading your post correctly, so far you have just over 3 hours invested. Keep at it and you will see some improvement but it comes slowly. Rest time between practice sessions is also important. Give your muscles time to rest and absorb what they have learned.
You might try different coins, the size of the coin can make a big difference. especially in the beginning. If you are using a half dollar, you will find that pre-1964 (solid silver) coins are easier to work with. The amount of wear on the edge of the coin can also make a difference. Find one that works for you. Good luck!

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant. Visualize Whirled Peas! |

It will take months- years to perfect. You are going to have to put in the time.
Sounds like you just started trying to perfect it. that's like saying, "i'm going to spend all day in the gym today- and when I get out I'm going to be buffed". the muscle pass wont work that way. If you are getting it up an inch or two- you are doing something right. keep at it. The distance will come with time practice. Its a hard move- most magicians cannot do it. I hope that you don't overlook all the other sleights, many of which are easier that will take your coin magic to the next level. Good luck |

Remember that Bobo's Modern Coin Magic is free online in pdf form. It doesn't contain the muscle pass, but many other sleights that are more useful. The muscle pass has loads of uses, but you have to be really advanced to be able to use it in that way. Make the muscle pass something you practise just a little bit each day and focus on other stuff. Then by the time you're ready to use it, you will have practised enough. Also check out coinvanish.com for tips on how to read Bobo's (it's a bit of an encyclopaedia).

I actually own 2 magic books and one of them is Bobo's. I took the time to learn all of the sleights in the book. I have not perfected all of them yet but I'm working on it. I want to learn the muscle pass because it's visual. I don't know the right words to explain this (there is a term, I just forgot it) but when you see a false transfer, even if you're good at it, some people can still figure it out. But if your hands never cross and your hands never close and a coin just zaps right in to your hand with no other movements or strings attatched, I think that's a VERY powerful visual effect. Take this for example.. I found this amazing:
http://youtu.be/F98Uviesu2g?t=1m33s It's literal eye candy. With the internet, youtube, etc, people know about sleight of hand but the things you can do with muscle passes are mind boggling. I believe if perfected that it is possible to conceal it in mid air by making is move too fast for the eye to see. With practice I hope to make it near invisible. Any opinions on my goal as far as reality and overall possibility with it? thanks! |

A false transfer on its own is easy to figure out. Just like a double lift on its own in card magic. Combine it in a routine however, and it can be incredibly fooling. Take the expansion of texture from Bobo's. The final phase involves a false transfer, but the effect is that the coin passes through the handkerchief in their hand. I use the french drop for it, which is probably the most prevalent vanish on youtube, and fool everyone with it (and entertain too - people love that trick!). I met a guy who said he learnt a coin vanish. I demonstrated the french drop and asked if that was the one he learnt and he said he didn't learnt anything as good at that... turns out he had! False transfers are made convincing by things other than the sleight.
On the other hand, *** that video looks amazing!!! Now I want to learn it! If you make it a goal and set your mind to it, I'm sure you can achieve it, but be aware that it will take many years to get that good so be sure to practise and perform other stuff too. Some of the things he describe require a lot of misdirection to achieve as well, which can only be gained by performing. |
