"Can I control/see your deck (or pad or box)?"
I suppose it happens rather often, and to me, who make my effects among friends in house rooms, this question returns very often. I've learned to avoid expressions like "It's a normal deck..." Or "It's a normal box" if they are not 100% normal and inspectable, but anyway sometimes somebody may ask: "Yes, you have some white cards for a prediction... Can I see them?" A rather good mentalism effect I've prepaired was ruined by such an unexpected question, and on that occasion I had no good answers... What is your answer or reaction if someone wants to inspect something that cannot be inspected? I use to say: "Certainly you can inspect this, but not now during the show, because I must remain concentrated... At the end of the show!" And very probably at the end of the routine everybody will have forgotten the initial question! Have you other psychological suggestions to avoid such questions or to prepare the right answer? |

Might be the audience you're in front of.
If it's friends, acquaintances, people you know one way or another they may feel they have the right to ask you to handle your props If it's not always friends or family members asking think about how you are framing the presentation. Or about the presentation itself, take out the opportunity for them to even think about wanting to handle the props. you control the situation, you control the flow of the presentation

I think your friends will say that like 60% because they know its not magic its a trick or something or they caught you so they wanna caught again unless you make it believable but with the strangers its about your presentation I guess
or you after you finish you can ask your friend the next day why you wanna examine my props |

Sun Tzu in the Art of War states that we should attack the plan of the ennemy in order to avoid the war. Come prepared with a preset soloution for each and every gimmick you use.
You could claim "sure, but let's not make our friends wait: you'll be able to look at the (cards, box, ring, penknife...) to your heart's content during and at the end of the trick" Do the trick and simply pocket or vanish the prop at the end having a genuine dupplicate in your pocket. If the person is stunned by the effect and doesn't ask, fine. If not, wait for the person to ask and say "oh sure, sorry... look at it it's beautiful deck of cards, box, ring, penknife... I use it all the time" as you pull out the genuine cards, box, ring, penkife... from your pocket. There are many other solutions like showing the props initially and switching it before the trick even started but the one above is easy and prevents breaking the pace of your show.
