If you're working for kids, get a squeaker!!!! I've had so much fun with this 1 second miracle that drives children mad! During my intro I palm the squeaker in my right hand, and after my intro and the parents go-ahead, I ask a child:
"Would you mind helping for one moment? Could you please hand me your favourite colour of caryon?" They do so and I hold it straight up and down, pinched between my left thumb and forefinger. I use my right hand to rotate it a bit all the while complimenting the child and saying stuff such as: "That is a great crayon! Red is amazing, I use it to colou.. hey! Did you know that?" (no explanation of what 'that' is) "Almost no one knows what that is but you chose the only one in that crayon pack!" (Now they are looking at me wonding what the heck I'm on about) "I mean, you must know it's the only squeaky crayon in there! Did it squeak when you were colouring with it?" (By now they are sure I'm mad) "Just look at that, right there!" (Now pointing with my right hand to either a distinctive logo or spot with no writing at all on the crayon wrapper) I reach out with my right hand's thumb and forefinger to pinch the indicated area and squeak the crayon. I can not tell you enough how important this set up to the squeak is, nor can I tell you the reactions I get with it. Squeak it once, give them a moment to freak out, then squeak it two or three times in a row to confirm their amazement, then do a cigarette sleight or two. |

CraogMcKee - that sounds brilliant! Another similar effect you could do for adults is to "smoke" an item on their table. Greg Wilson taught me at a lecture, but basically, borrow say a pen, get out a lighter, pretend to light the end, put the lighter away and you can breath out a puff of smoke (I don't want to reveal method, but lets just say you don't need a magical gimmick, but you may need to take a trip to a pharmacy...). Similar byplay can be done as above, but may work better for different audiences.

If you like challenge type effects to supplement magic tricks (like the paper fold challenge) there are a lot of effects using matchsticks. I do not use matchsticks in the restaurant but instead substitute toothpicks or coffee stirrers. One of my favorites is using 12 toothpicks to form four squares and then moving only three of them creating three squares the same size as the original ones and still using all 12 toothpicks. There are numerous books, videos, articles, etc. on this topic, particularly under bar magic/bets.

He also has a nice "T&R sugar packet" effect as well as a pretty sweet quarter in milker (those little ones). If the adults are enjoying a cold beer before their meal Sankey also provides a really cool effect where he flattens a beer bottle cap with his bare hands. He also teaches a pretty sweet "Broken and restored cork" routine. I use some of these and they are indeed what you're looking for. |
