When I was a teenager, I got into cards and coins. Haven't kept up with coins much, but I'm interested virtually anything one can do with a non-stacked, non-gaffed deck of borrowed cards.
I've never had any aspirations of doing magic professionally... more interested in it as an academic pursuit and a hobby. Of course, that's not to say I don't perform. I always have a deck of cards in my pocket, and usually perform for folks around the office, clients, and the occasional patent examiner. I've been meaning to get more involved in mentalism in the past several years, but for one reason or another it hasn't happened yet. Why do I show up to NVMS? I don't get excited about politics much -- and less so about political discussions. But I like having conversations with magicians. For all our ideological differences, we at least have SOME working knowledge of magic in common. Sometimes that makes conversations more enjoyable. Separately, over the course of my years here (more lurking than posting, I think), I've come to respect a few of the regulars. That's part of what keeps me coming back. |

What about reading room, knitting room, and sitting room magic? I remember my father used to visit my grand parents house on Sunday afternoons to court my mom in their living room. I still have no idea how the hell you're supposed to court a woman on Sunday afternoon while her whole family is in the next room listening to the radio.

Long time magic hobbyist here, with a keen interest in stage illusions. I've designed and built a few, myself, too. I'm hoping my son will take an interest in performing magic, so I've got an excuse to make more sawdust.
So, apart from here, I lurk the Grand Illusion and The Workshop forums, and contribute where I can.

SOH with cards and coins are my favorites. I have posted lots in other threads (obviously, since your post count isn't increased by posting in NVMS) but haven't in a while as I'm too busy with school to practice much these days and don't feel I have anything useful to contribute.

I am a professional magician. My specialty is close up magic. Growing up the cheapest thing for me to buy was a deck of cards, sponge balls and kept coins on me to learn sleight of hand moves and perform magic tricks. Didn't have the money or the know how to come up with a stage show. Now that I am older, I can see it's possible to put together a stage show on the cheap and you don't have to have expensive illusions. However, because I have practiced close up magic for so long it is what I am best at so it is what I do to make a living.
I have a Bachelors degree in Computer Science but I am more of a people person and most computer programmers are crabby introverts with terrible social skills. Plus I like working for myself as working for other people in this day and age doesn't seem to provide the stability and the ability to get ahead that working for myself provides, plus you cut out the un-necessary BS that comes with working for somebody else when you work for yourself (plus just being your own boss is nice as you have more control over your own destiny and your destiny is not in the hands of an employer or somebody else). You also are truly rewarded based on how hard and smart you work so working for myself seems to be good for me. At one time in this country, you could probably get ahead by working for somebody else, but it seems those days are over, at least for now. I am a believer that if you work for yourself, then do what you love to do, otherwise you won't be very good at what you do and you have to be good at what you do to get paid for it. Plus it's much more rewarding and good for your emotional and mental health to do what you love to do and make money doing it. I also enjoyed being a citizen soldier in the Army National Guard, though the deployments were pretty rough. The profession of soldiering is very much a people profession and you got to be a people person to be a good soldier. I am now honorably discharged from the Army National Guard after serving two deployments, one to Bosnia and another to Afghanistan, serving with the infantry. But my happiest moments are putting smiles on peoples faces and making them laugh and be amazed, so I think my ultimate profession is that of an artist and magician (and there is also a lot of art in leadership and the profession of arms as well and that's another reason why I appreciation the art of leadership and the profession of arms). I also did a lot of growing up on my deployments overseas too and learned a lot of valuable life lessons. I was told by people who work at the Magic Castle that the part of the Castle that gets the most respect is not the room where stage performances take place, but the close up gallery/room. Never been to the Castle but would love to go one day. Right now, I spend a lot of time booking close up magic shows or strolling close up magic as well as working restaurants. That being said, I never had good experiences posting in the Magic related forums but that doesn't deter me from the Art of Magic. However, because I don't have good experiences in the Magic related forums, I simply don't post much there. I noticed this seems to be a pattern with most people here. So, it seems, when I stick to non-magic related conversation it's best here. Odd that it is this way on a Magic forum but it appears to be so. You know, when post about politics for example, you expect some confrontation or argument because that simply the nature of politics, so it's no big deal. But when you talk about magic or try to help people with magic or offer your point of view or ask others for help in the art or business of magic, you don't expect much argument when you do and you want magic to be pleasant, fun and amazing. So, if people want to argue or fight over things in magic then it's best not to bring up the topic so as not to disrespect or take away from the Art of Magic itself. Edit: I think one life lesson I learned on deployment is that you really don't know when you are going to go so you might as well live for today and do what you love to do because their is never a guarantee that you will be here tomorrow. You come to terms with your own mortality. So you live for today and appreciate the simple things and other people in life. Life is too precious and much too short to let it go to waste on living a meaningless life or wasting it stuck in a job you hate or not taking time out to appreciate the simple things and other people in life. One thing is for sure, I don't take life or much of anything for granted anymore like I used to when I younger. I also enjoy life much more these days than what I used to because I have a much deeper appreciation for a lot of things.
