Obvious tips include making sure that the surface you are using is clean and preferably polished. Also that the planchette itself is clean on the base. It helps if the top of the planchette is a *little* tacky just so the fingers of the volunteers can get some purchase.
It is easier to get an upturned wine glass to move than a planchette, so I would always suggest using a glass if at all possible. The lead up to a ouija board/glass moving session is very important. You need to get your volunteers in the right frame of mind so that when it comes to using the ouija, they are expecting success. It's all in the mind. If you can, ask your group of volunteers if anyone has used the ouija before. If you have some volunteers who have used one before, and they have used it successfully in the past, use them as your first volunteers. If they have used a ouija board successfully in the past, there is no reason why they shouldn't do so again. This is a bit like a hypnotist preferring to use subjects who have a track record of going into trance. They're just easier to use. Once the other guests have seen the planchette moving, in their minds they become primed for it to move when it is their turn. However if the planchette does not move, don't panic. It won't always move, and in this eventuality it is just evidence of how 'fair' you are. "This doesn't always work," you can say, "because it isn't a trick. It's the real deal." I could write an entire book on this and the subtleties. Oh wait! I have! The Paranormal Entertainer from http://www.readerofminds.co.uk - take a look. I promise you that it contains everything you need.

Well worth the purchase, if I might add! I've learned a LOT from Paul!

Every time I use it I have to rub the board well with a dry cloth before the planchette will move easily. Also, bear in mind that the more people who have a finger on the planchette the harder it is to tell if anyone's pushing it! Barry |

I make planchettes on the side and sell them to working Spiritualists who love them; Jerome Finley and several others have the one's I make and cherish them. That said; you want a device that is light weight and if not on rollers (which they should be) felt pads on the legs.
I always wax my boards significantly but they are also finished with a very thick resin so as to insure easy action. These are the two key things you need to be certain of. The other thing you need to deal with is your doubt. . . . this, more than anything else, thwarts people's ability to work a OUIJA or Pendulums or other ideomotor type phenomena. We doubt the ability (our ability) and we panic. . . usually because of magician's thinking (wanting it to be a trick or easy out) Get Paul's book on glass moving! This is the best place to start. |

You can find thin sheets of teflon and glue it to the bottom of the planchette too.

David, it's really difficult to respond to your question. There are many things you've left unsaid, and without knowing the answers any of the responses may not help.
1) How have you set things up and prepared the audience/participants? 2) Have you told them what is going to happen? 3) How many people are touching the planchette? 4) What are you saying after the "test" starts? 5) How did you pick the people to participate? 6) Have you shown how the planchette will move? Getting things to work will depend upon what you say and do, and without knowing what you say and do any advice will just be guessing. |

Another "trick" that I remembered last night was using a tall "Hand Table" design in that the height from the table will make the unit more sensitive. The tallest one's I've ever made are about 2 inches off the table but I've seen a few that are more than twice that. |
