One reason I get so worked up is because of things like when my girlfriend's kid went to the doctor. He does some sort of strenuous physical activity every day for at least an hour. He has ridden a bicycle 20 miles with his Grandma regularly. He does yoga classes, karate classes, swims. The kid is in shape. He has a high BMI because he has a lot of muscle.
They took him in because he was coughing a lot and they took one look at his curvy mother and his BMI and said he was just overweight and needed to exercise more. They just jumped to a conclusion based on their bias and a faulty tool. It's crap. He has all of the symptoms of asthma and they didn't even consider it. No lung X-Rays. No questions about what his physical activity actually is. Just an immediate "well you weigh too much and there's your problem." I'm against that sort of thing. I always will be unless there is a sudden outpouring of true experimental research proving that being overweight is a direct cause of all of those diseases. It's not there yet. That was my only point and all of the links provided by others have only supported my point by demonstrating that it's all just correlational. I commend Magnus on reading the fine print.

OK. Thanks for answering. Like you say, we don't agree, but hopefully we can agree to differ.
I do think BMI is too simplistic. And that diagnosis sounds terrible. |

Would a pure experimental effort at addressing the question be ethical? Wouldn't you have to get a control group and an experimental group and deliberately create obesity?

I will admit that she is attractive, but
"She's not all that and a bag of chips", as they say. When my ex-wife had the baby, I lost all my weight; I didn't go around bragging about it. (Sheesh) |

BMI is not a good reflection of health or ideal weight.
Today it is not considered to be the most accurate reflection of whether someone is obese or in a safe range. Eat better - use some resistance training regularly - do a moderate amount of aerobic exercise every day... feel better, live longer. This stuff is too simple, yet everyone wants to buy the latest books or fad diets etc. Laying off the carbs and increasing protein intake is an amazing way to lose some weight - protein takes more energy units for the body to process which increases metabolism. Worked great for me. I don't care or judge what others do - do what makes you feel good.

Yeah- what's her excuse? She's a fitness trainer, it's her job to be in shape. Anyway, she's a genius at viral marketing; nobody even knew her name until a few days ago. No such thing as bad publicity, right?
