Talk about complete misrepresentation of what I've said.
What "established views on the morality of our veterans" are you talking about? I don't think I've ever said anything condemning veterans, only the senseless killing, and the true, and completely unnecessary, horror of war.

We'd be better off if wars were fought with unmanned machines on all sides.
Sort of like battle chess. No human casualties. But that's sci fi... Well...

We'd be better off if wars were fought with unmanned machines on all sides. I think it's dangerous to give too much power to machines. Who knows, you might have a scenario like what was envisioned in the movie Terminator. I think it's impossible to keep humans out of war and with machines dominating too much in waging war, that could be very scary and terrifying as if war isn't scary and terrifying enough as it is. It's funny you mention that, but some machines under development are like robots that go out and wage war and they have some terrifying and scary ways of killing people. I was watching it on the Discovery Channel and I can't remember specifics, but it also talked about the dangers of letting machines take over the grim task of waging war too much. You have to think about it, machines don't get PTSD like humans do and America is always looking for a casualty free war, so there is a temptation to let machines just take over, but there is a big danger to that. I think in many ways, it's better to keep the dirty work of war left to humans in many respects and it keeps us appreciating the true destructive power and senselessness of war, where if we let machines take over, there is a danger we lose sight of that and that could become a danger in and of itself in so many different and unpredictable ways.

No, I meant we still control them from afar. Thus the battle chess reference. Eventually the enemy would find crafty ways to defeat robots or technology and you would have to send in humans up close and personal to do the dirty work. Machines and technology can't do it all. There is no such thing as a clean or casualty free war and war is not a game of battle chess, it's a deadly serious business. But again and I know I am preaching to the choir here, the best option is just not to have a war in the first place. That's not always possible unforuntately. You rely too heavily on technology or robots, you could be giving your enemy an advantage too or creating more enemies unknowingly because it all seems like a video game and it's much easier to just push a button because you can't see or fully understand the consquences of your actions as you would if you there in person doing the dirty work yourself. I imagine if robots did all dirty work many people could mistakenly view war as just some sort of game and lose some of their greatest advocates for peace which are the veterans themselves because war would no longer be waged by humans but only machines.

Vlad, your thorough and thoughtful post was wonderful. It does contain a rather funny typo, however. Germany didn't go to war looking for "liebensraum".

Both, or all sides, only need to destroy each other's equipments and since all are drones, no one dies. No one needs to die. No one needs to kill. The only exception are the zealots who infiltrate societies to martyr themselves, eg suicide bombers. Those then can be tried as murderers. Imagine a technology like that. Where my might over yours doesn't necessitate me killing you. I just take your weapons away. If you say it will never happen this way or it is impossible... Well, as I said, it is sci fi.
