Hello all! I'm new here. I've been doing impromptu close up magic for decades at clubs and restaurants (and anywhere else!). Glad to finally be a part of this community. Last week I just added the Blackout coin disappearing trick to my arsenal. Love it!
My question: I ordered a couple of XL thumb tips, and they are a bit too big! I need to "shrink" them. Is there a known method that can accomplish this? Boiling water? Brief low-temp oven visit? Microwave? Thanks again for any help or suggestions! |

Are they plastic or rubber?

Hi Mike,
Welcome to the Café! You'd really just do better to order some regular size Vernet tips. For the mileage you'll get, they are the cheapest magic prop you will ever buy. Save the large ones for any stage work. You can possibly fit up to a 12" silk in one... jam fit it with some of the silk between the side of your thumb and the inside wall of the tip. It will act like a wedge and stay put. Or cut the end of the tip off and use it like a Dye Tube for color changing silks. ~michael

I have always been told you can boil water, dip the thumb tip in it and then re-mold it with your fingers. I've never tried it. Obviously this would apply to plastic thumbtips and who knows if it works with the particular plastic of your thumbtip.

Buying a thumb tip without trying it on is like buying shoes without trying them on. Attend a lecture or attend a convention that has "dealers". Some of them will always be selling thumb tips. Try them on until you find one that's the perfect fit. You will thank me later.

Update:
Well, I boiled some water and stuck in the thumb tip. It did shrink proportunately. And now a perfect fit! I only left the thumb tip in for a couple of minutes. Then shaped the entry a little with my circled thumb and index finger while still soft and ran some cold water into it. I did this with 2 different brands(plastic) with the same results. |

Thank You for doing the experiment and confirming this. I'm glad my suggestion actually helped.
Would you mind trying it on some shoes too? |

We repaired our wooden props with super glue and baking soda. I tried this once on a TT that was too big. Applied a ring of glue around the opening then dipped it in the soda. Some sort of reaction takes place, for it will get hot and rock hard. Took several coats but it worked.

Glad the boiling water worked for you, I have the opposite problem, my fingers are very large and I tried the boiling water and then putting a wooden dowel in while still hot and letting it cool, it sort of worked but after a couple of days it seems to revert to it original state, any ideas ?
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

For the price just buy new ones.

If his fingers are very large he might have trouble finding ones that are wide enough. I say try again but leave them in the boiling water a tad longer and let them cool on the dowel a little longer, repeat if needed. It would have to be some kind of super high tech material to go completely back after any number of deformations.
