I have made a dancing cane out of a dowel rod that is weighted.
What should my string be? I tried mono-filament fishing line but it shines in the light. I got some strong black upholstery thread and it is pretty visible even at a distance. So what string should I use?

That's not really a juggling question, but the dancing cane's I've seen all used black thread.

Al,
Thanks. I know it is not really a juggling question. But I wasn't sure where it went. I also posted a similar thread in "The Workshop" but that didn't seem quite right either since it was just a technical question because the cane is already made. My faulty logic was that since it is moving an apparatus in an amazing way it MIGHT be shoehorned into the juggling forum. And I figured at least magicians on The Café who also juggle would be some of the best to ask this.

Hey Curt, welcome.
I didn´t think that was a "Juggling Question" either,. then again, I WAS surprise last week, to see Brian Dubè coming out with a line of "Dancing Wands"!!! yeah!,... kinda like,.. `our´ Dancing Canes. In honesty,. I didn´t like it,.. ,but,.. the Jugglers are the most creative group of free thinkers I know, it´ll be interesting to see what levels they take it to! Someday, it will probably considered,.. `theirs´. don´t get tangeled,.. gallagher. p.s.: Jeff McBride uses,.. and recommends `Invisible Thread´ from the company Gutermann (Germany). A "Sewing" thread,.. virtually nö shine.,.. and strong. |

Yeah I think it is called "levi stick" - like a dancing cane but jugglers (and spinners) do not at all make it a secret there is string atached. It is more about the movement and to make this beautiful to watch then to make it magic and a secret how it works.

You are right this is the most helpful forum at the magic Café, and you were smart to ask your question here.

I just use ordinary black sewing thread. If you need to make the thread look invisible, you have to test in different light conditions. Performing in daylight is not good.
