Hmmm...a carrying case for the shells. That is a good idea, and if we find that there is enough interest in it, we may see what we can come up with.
Thanks, Harry, for your comments. However, the "camouflage" idea is mine not Chef's. We both fooled around with a lot of different ideas, but when the solution finally hit me, neither of us could figure why it took so long. In retrospect, it seems both practical and obvious. It took us more than a year for the solution to hit. Sometimes the obvious is anything but obvious. I designed the method and mechanics of the trick, Chef created and demonstrated the wonderful routine. The routine included in the DVD is great, but is only the start. We know that there are a lot of new moves and dodges that can be created using this method, and know that when the cleverer minds in the magic community get to play with them, even greater stuff will come out. Although the method of Steve Dusheck's Thimble-Rig is similar, this is not a version of his trick. In fact, the use of this basic principle in a shell game routine goes back at least to the thirties. Chef and I had a lot of fun as well as frustration in coming up with the set. We are very proud of it. Glad to see so many people seem to like it. We also have to credit our freind, Paul Gross of Hocus-Pocus, who recognized a good idea, and brought it to us to make it happen. |

Whit, your thinking on this was true genius! I can fully understand how it took so long to come up with just the right thing. Sometimes the obvious is only obvious after the fact! Man thanks for the discovery!
Right after I posted my note I started rooting around looking for my old “Thimble Rig” instructions and notes. I thought I remembered that Steve did credit an earlier version of the trick as inspiration. However, I did not know that the methodology dated to the thirties or earlier. Your application of the principal with this set of props, especially with the size of the props, is a gift to the working magic community! I am looking forward to watching and learning the routine. While there may some inventive minds out there that will use the props and especially the methodology as a springboard to developing different routines, I am sure that the experience, thinking, and sweat put into your routine will suffice me for years! I say bravo to you, Chef, and Paul for taking the time to develop and manufacture this and for taking the risk in putting it out. Honestly, you guys could have kept it close and had guys like me chomping at the bit begging for its release! Thanks for putting it out!

I have been debating getting the Trade Show Shells for a while now. I just got a look at the video teaser and found it MOST helpful. And, yes, it is a spliced-together, trimmed down edit (for obvious reasons) but it gave me a much better picture of the handling in general and answered the questions I had. (The gimmick is inspired!) Needless to say, I have a set on the way.
Whit, I don't know whether to thank you for yet ANOTHER wonderful tool, or take your name in vain for the hours you've robbed from me that I could have spent doing more socially acceptable things like...uh... ...Thanks Whit!!! I just got my Jumbo Trade Show Shells this morning. All I can say is ... WOW! The props are first rate. The shells are quite substantial with an unmistakable feeling of quality. The peas look great and with some care (keeping them is a small carton or padded box so they don't rattle around and get dinged up or get damaged by the heavy shells) they should last for a very long time. As for the gimmick...simply diabolical. As I watched the routine on the DVD, the grin on my face just kept getting bigger and bigger. This is a wonderfully COMMERCIAL piece of work. But you know...now that I think about it...if you're considering getting this one, do me a favor and just pass right on by. You see, this is just TOO good to let EVERYONE out there get their hands on it. (Much better to keep it greedily to the few of us who already have it.) Seriously, it's THAT good! So...move along, nothing to see here. All kidding aside, grab this one while you can. This is a workers routine for the real world. Don't let the price tag scare you. It's worth every penny.

Thanks to everyone for all the good comments on the Trade Show Shells. We are very gratified that people are happy with their investment.
Hocus-Pocus and School for Scoundrels have made a limited number of sets. Whether or not we make any more depends on how well and how quickly these sell. The production costs are high, the inventory bulky, and the targeted market (trade show workers) may be small. So whether we make any more will depend to a high degree on how these sets do. If they are slow sellers, we will probably not be making any more. If they are very popular, we may do another run. So if you think you have a need for something like this, you should get it while it is available. |

Whit said (in a previous post), "They are not however, as David indicated, a limited production."
I said, "I WISH they were limited." I guess dreams DO come true I'm telling you now, get them while you can. You won't regret it! Whit, IF you do decide of making a carrying case (like the one for the table), Could you let me know? Thanks!

Really interesting stuff, Mats! Your handling of the shells is unique and interesting, and is very deceptive. I can see why you drive people crazy with this.
All the best to you, Mats. Great stuff! ******************* I just got a private message concerning using the Jumbo Shells on the street. I thought that others might be interested in this question, so here is how I replied: The Jumbo Shells are suitable for such an event in some ways. They are practical in the sense that they can be done surrounded, since they are mechanical. However, they may be a bit dicey on the street, because they are the Three-Shell Game after all, and must be performed with folding money in the performer's hand as part of the method of the trick. The appearance of the shells and money could draw attention of the police and give them the wrong idea. You might end up in front of a magistrate trying to explain that you were doing a public service "explaining how people can be cheated" and not actually trying to take money from the onlookers. I normally don't recommend that people use three-card monte or the shell game in street performance for this reason. I have seen several bad stories on this board about such incidents--you may want to do a search. Also, the price of the trick is very high in relation to the amount you may be able to make on the street from its performance. The Jumbo Trade Show Shells are a relatively modest price for the average return on the investment in a trade show situation--much less so for a street performer. The shells are very sturdy and would stand up to the rigors of the street, but the peas are fairly fragile for street work. They are made from dylite--a material similar to styrofoam--with a heavy coating of acrylic paint. You can see that they could be easily dented or scratched in the course of street work, unless you were extremely careful with them. You wouldn't want to bang them around in transport, or drop them on the ground during the performance. The upside is that the average street performer's table, one suitable for the cups and balls, would be adequate to perform this trick on. The trick would probably be a real traffic stopper for you, and would be a real break from all the other street performer's working with the cups and balls. If you can clear things with the police and merchants ahead of time, and can justify the heavy price investment, and think you can keep the peas from getting too banged up, then I would say you should consider it. Hope this helps. |

I am just wondering what others think of the shells? Whit, and future considerations for a carrying case yet???

Those are the Vernet shells. I had to kneel down, and think small thoughts for the shot. You must excuse me...apparently my wit sleeps in later than I do.
Yes, those are the shells and I love em' I have the picture on my site: http://www.DavidJGreene.com

After these great reviews I am considering getting a set of these Trade Show Shells. Wondered how big of audience they could play to? Also will they stand up to any kind of examination?
Thanks, Walking Bob in Iowa |

Wondered how big of audience they could play to? Also will they stand up to any kind of examination? They are designed for the conditions of the trade show booth, but will play to a fairly large group in a cabaret situation. Perfect for Television. Both the 2" dylite pea (similar to an antennae ball) and the shells are completely examinable. The spectators can handle both at the same time with no problem. In fact, this will only increase their puzzlement. |

Hoy Guys,
Ive been drewling over these shells for a few months and read everything there is to read about them. Now, I can proudly say that I got them delivered. They are indeed beautiful. I will be doing this effect in all of my show. As my "magic" character is acrazy hitman, I will be doing this effect with a BB-Gun. I tried this and it works great. The BB-Gun is exchanged for a grenade after a while. So you see, your not even limited to the pea that is provided. Thx for creating this beautiful effect Guys, Keep up that uncredible good work... |
