I am interested in buying a linking finger rings routine. I have found a few video's and reviews, but can anyone tell me the exact difference between Joe Porper's Ghostly Linking Finger Rings and David Regal's Linking Finger Ring Project? What is the justification for the huge price difference? Does or has Porper's version something Regal's version does not?
Many thanks in advance for any advice! PS: I would like to end the routine with the visual unlinking of two borrowed rings. Would this be possible with both versions? And with Porper's AmazeRing? |

Joe Porper is a master craftsman, therefore he demands high prices for his work. Just like any other master in skilled labor jobs. No, Porper and Regal rings are different. The justification for the price is high quality, a routine, and if you do paid shows, you will earn more the investment.
No linking finger ring permits visual unlinking if I understand your question correctly. This is not a close-up trick, therefore it can be somewhat perceived as a visual unlinking by using Nick Lewin's method in his Ultimate Linking Finger Ring Routine that sells for $350.00, but does not come with any rings. You have to provide your own rings. |

Thanks for your reply, Bill. I will check out Nick Lewin's Ultimate Routine.
To me, the following unlinking looks pretty visual: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSTKUQqzgHU I believe it is Lu Chen in the Magic Castle in Singapore, using Porper's ghostly rings, but I could be wrong. Thank again! |

YES that is Lu Chen with the Porper ring... his handling is slightly different, but the routine I wrote for Porper is almost the same. Liu Chen says it is his favorite trick.

Pete, which Porper Ring?
Does Porper make that switch pad? |

The Ghostly. No, the pad is Lu Chen's.

Pete, Did Joe Porper change the design of the Ghostly to work more like the AmaZeRing? The text kind of suggests that with the words.
Pete, did you watch the video above, it is a new one, Now Lu Chen just has the rings drop though each other. This is not the way the Ghostly works, is it? My understanding is that it is more of an inward Himber. This is not what Lu Chen was using in the above video reference. Please clarify. |

I am not sure. Have not spoken with Lu Chen for some time. I do not think the pad is gimmicked. It is possible he's using the AmaZering. I cannot tell from the video. There is a young magician Kyle Eschindoing my routine on http://www.pete-biro.com look under my favorite videos

Now guys I have this problem to. This is a nearly 5 star effect that I would like to perform to this effect for a while now. The problem is there are so many out there with a huge range of prices, yet they all look the same in my eyes. I don't know how it's done and maybe that's why, but I'm looking forward to doing this effect. May anyone guide me please ?
The simple effect I'm looking for is borrowing 3 finger rings, linking them and not touching them (using a pencil) and the spectator & cam can come really close to see they are actually linked. Is David Regal's version the best one out there & simplest ? Seems that way from the reviews. I loved Lu Chen's performance of it (was it new year's eve or what, don't remember, but I'm not asking for Lu Chen's exact version, could be too expensive for me). Thanks anyways. |

Even though I would love everyone to buy Porper's ring (which I designed) THE RING DOES NOT MATTER. It is all in YOUR PRESENTATION. You can make your own key ring like a linking ring and kills with it.

Pete in order to have a presentation you must have the ACTUAL EFFECT first. So I was wondering if anyone can tell me a great version for a reasonable price. David Regal's one looks AWESOME in the demo. It's a bit pricy but ok compared to the rest of the linking rings out there, some pretty expensive ones out there. And the KILLER in David Regal's version was the ending of how he seperated the last 2 rings without touching them !

I'm on the fence on Regals and the linking ring plot/routine altogether. I've owned and sold both of Porper's rings, Ghostly and Amazering. Nothing wrong with them, I just couldn't overcome the appearence of those rings. Don't get me wrong, they were by far, at the time, the best ones out there.
I made five of my friends (laymen) separately watch the Regal routine and then I asked them what they thought and if they had any idea of how it was done. A few different responses, one came close (guessing it was a stooge with a ring with a gap), but the general answer on the impact of the routine in and of itself seemed to be that it was impressive as long as you hadn't been exposed to very much magic before. They all liked the routine, some were more impressed than others. So I'm still on the fence. I want that ooompf! I mean, I love the premise of the effect, it's as close to real magic as you can get. And that's why it should command so much bigger reactions than I have a feeling it will. I think the one thing that limits this routine is the obvious fact that only one of the rings actually needs to be linked to the others. There is no way to hide it and it stares the audience dead in the eye. I think David does a very good job hiding the switch and really showing three borrowed rings going into his hand. It is truly amazing. Let me rephrase that: It SHOULD be truly amazing and awe inspiring to a layman and yet it's "just" amazing. Amazing. Not breathtaking. Am I wishing for too much here? Am I overthinking it? What do YOU think are the downsides to the linking finger ring routine?

I think the difference between "amazing" and "breathtaking" lies in the performance. This effect has that potential in the right hands.
This is not meant to imply anything about you as I have no idea of your abilities. I do applaud your desire to create a breathtaking experience for your spectators. So often a trick that takes your breath away when performed by a pro falls flat when performed by an amateur. You have to build excitement as you perform the trick. Your excitement builds the audience's excitement. I've seen it happen many times. A good example is the Magic Square. It can bore an audience to death, but if you show excitement each time the columns add up the same your excitement will generate excitement in the audience. Andre

Great points Andre! It's hard to create a performance like that and it will take a lot of practise, rehearsal and stage time to get a presentation that fits the performer and enables him (or her) to take their audience breath away. I just need to convince myself that the structure of the routine itself won't be an obstacle on the path to perfection.
But maybe I need to start on the other end and begin with the presentation and performance, make it as exciting as I can. Scripting first, structure next. Thank you mr Hagen, you really made me think!
