I should think the standard which keeps your particular client happy is the one to adopt.

I am with Starr in that when it comes to fairs and festivals, I too charge per the day. I offer 3 different packages that are based on testing and knowing what most festivals or fairs are looking for. each has their own price point. This way I can 1) have a better shot at landing the festival or fair and 2) I can track which folks are leaning towards and adjust pricing the following year based on that data. If they book me for multiple dates, I give a discount for that.

I do not sell based on price.
My thought has always been that after a "deal" (Which really is what selling a show amounts to for the client.) a client will evaluate the value they received for the dollar they paid. I prefer to keep them from thinking of it in terms of dollars, but rather in terms of the experience they received or other factors. This is MUCH harder for them to evaluate you in comparison to other alternatives available to them. I have people for the past 15 years who think I am the only one who can do what I do for them. We all know this is not as true as I would like it to be. BUT maybe it is true when you consider the perception they have. I do not make it about money and in reality I charge MORE than others do. It is just a philosophy I use and it is not right for everyone. I have NO IDEA if it would work in markets I am not in. I could be absolutely wrong for another performer or another market. Don't take what I say as anything other than simply mentioning the way I look at things. Also it should be said that ALL of my business is repeat, or word of mouth. I do not do traditional marketing. I have always been in markets that were like comedy clubs or resorts or where I was doing restaurant work or what not. So if my philosophy would work with traditional marketing I also have no idea. Take it with a grain of salt.

Curtis: lol =) Since when did I ever say or suggest I was not selling talent or service? I do a ton of festivals and fairs every single year with my wife and we would not be doing this market or any market if I did not have a great show that is tailored to the market and to solutions for the client. I offer a 3 tiered package offering because it is smart marketing practice and it works. That has nothing to do with not having talent. lol =)
Mindpro: I am also not sure where you are coming from my friend. lol =) I totally respect you. I am often times THE headliner at these events. it is wording or something I stated that is throwing off this misconception? The 3 tiered approach is a marketing strategy that gets folks buying my pro level package every single time. my rate on the pro level package is 98% every year or more. Now if this is a festival or fair of which I have worked before or was referred to, then I do not do a 3 tiered approach at all. Close Up Dave: They are buying talent and service offerings but they are also buying Solutions. I am a solutions provider to them. The approach I take is often for first time festival and fairs of which I am touching base on for the first time. I give them a 3 show package offering (per day) structured in a very specific way. Each package gives the fair ior festival a specific program that works for them and for me as well. but it is also strategic marketing that works too get them to not only see my value, but to book my pro level package 98% of the time. I work for a marketing agency, and this practice is nothing new, it is actually quite common. Perhaps I am just not explaining myself well enough and for that I apologize. Kyle

Kyle I understand you completely and appreciate your continued feedback. And my comment to Curtis was more so about what he does vs. thinking your approach is based on price. His stunts for companies are quite different than almost everything that the people on this forum tend to do, so I was hoping he might care to share a bit more also.
Thanks again everyone! |

Apple is a luxury brand the holds more than 50% of the market for most of its products. While there are many of other brands that are 50% less than Apple. But why doesn't Apple ever spoil? Why is Apple a leader? Once you realize why they do not rot. Your clients will change and prices don't seem to matter as much. Don't get me wrong their is a budget for certain type of markets, but not always the cheapest get the job nor does the most expensive. ITs the over all value to the client.

The only packages I offer Fairs and Festivals is based upon the number of days and number of shows each day. My show for these events is constructed to provide their crowd with a professional show presented to the best of my abilities. I think there are advantages to offering packages, but there are disadvantages I see as well. For example, if you are performing a lower priced offering and someone in the audience is scouting out performances for a larger venue, you just short changed yourself. Your reputation is also at stake for each audience member (who are forming an image of what you represent). If their budget is significantly below my quote,I prefer to walk away rather than skimp on what I bring and/or perform. I do realize that offering packages can sometimes better explain why a fee is what it is and can be effective in driving the sale up potentially, but I have leaned the way it sounds like Danny and others do it. This is why I really like this discussion, because I am not fixed on my current way forever, and like hearing what others find successful.

I am also glad for the discussion as it is great to see different ways in which folks go about things. I do not thing there is a right or wrong way. there really is just a way in which works best for you as an entertainer.
One thing I want to make clear is that the show packages I offer are never anything less then a 100% professional experience. I would never offer a fair or festival anything but the best I can and every package I offer does that for me and my wife. It is more in line with their possible different needs form say strolling magic to stage shows to a combination of both. All solve different needs. Kyle

I was thinking from my show perspective.. For Fairs and Festivals , I do not offer one price with a bigger sound, bigger illusions, backdrop etc, I put these in my show to match up with the venue. I consider it to be part of my expertise to properly choose the construct of the performance to fit the venue.
I know some magicians offer packages that include certain illusions or effects based upon the package price. That is not to say any are less than professional, it just means that the venue has a say in the performance content. I choose not to offer this for the reasons I mentioned. I currently only offer strolling in the negotiation stage rather than part of my initial quote. This is just my personal preference. |

Yep I agree. As noted my packages are not limited in regards to amount of illusions I bring or if I add in a backdrop. In other words my packages are not weakening what I am offering. my packages are really based on various needs the fair or festival might have. So for me my packages really are about things like strolling magic, stage show or both. It works for my wife and I very well. You have to figure out what works best for you.

Such a great discussion. This makes me realize that I've been trying to play both sides, which I think is why I feel something needs to be changed. This reveals a flaw in both my approach and in communicating what the product itself is. Thanks again gentleman

Dave: It is great for someone to come in and ask a question and be as open and sincere as you have been. many post a question but do not take the chance to really listen, absorb it, ask questions and keep an open mind. not everything is right for everybody, but you are going about it the right way by absorbing it all and making decisions that are right for you. I commend you for that.
