Hey there fellow busking magicians!
I'm very excited for I will soon be travelling down under to work the streets. I hear they are pretty strict with the things you take into their territory and wood is apparently a delicate issue. The table I work on is made of wood and so I wonder if I'll have any trouble crossing the border with it. Do you guys know anything about this? Thanks a lot. |

Hi Latoigo,
I've entered Australia dozens of times but have never brougt my table (have one there stored). So I can't give an answer based on that experience. As for wooden products I believe they're largely concerned about larger wooden products such as cargo containers & furniture. Obviously Australia is very concerned about the import of any non-native species (& rightfully so). Any fruit, food, plant, seeds (oranges etc.) is obviously taboo. They usually fumigate the plane with spray upon arrival while you're in it. On your entry form you'll have to declare any goods brought in and if memory serves me correct I think they also ask for wooden products. So it may be an issue. I have no idea whether your traveling on a tourist, student, or working holiday visa.....& 95% of the time you'll pass thru customs no worries....but if you arrive with a table, magic apparatus, and limited funds, on a tourist/visitor visa, you may be asked how you intend to support yourself for an extended period (busking or working is not the appropriate answer). Of course you can email customs or contact a consulate for a more definitive/precise answer on a small wooden table. Good luck and let us know how it goes. |

Mario: Performers.net is kind of not working anymore. I mean, I tried to register myself but registrations are closed due to recent massive spam activity.
Stperformer: That is kind of exactly my fear. I will arrive on a tourist visa with a wooden table and a suitcase full of tricks. I mean, it's not that I'm arriving with lots and lots of stuff but they could (and probably will) start asking questions. I guess I need an aliby? |

G'day Latig0
2 issues mate - bringing your gear for performance on a tourist visa I am not sure about - however down at circular Quey in Sydney I have seen plenty of overseas performers busking with gear I expect they brought with them. In regard to bringing in your wooden table I expect you will be ok. It would be a good idea to check with these people first. I have re-entered Oz on many occasions and brought with me wooden items like ornamental wooden masks, table place mats, carved signs and carven wooden statues etc. Including from Indonesia where a lot of these things are confiscated because when inspected they have live wood eating insects in them. When you arrive the inspectors take your item and inspect it closely (they are looking for these insects - biological threats) we have been known to spray our items with serious fly spray before heading home (they have found dead insects one time after spraying and that was ok - we kept the gear). I have taken a wooden table top that I fix to a microphone stand in and out of oz and that was no problem at all - but on the trip back in to Oz it was inspected just the same. Good luck with it mate - I hope it goes well for you - enjoy the journey. Bob Latta (aka troppo Bob) |

Yeah Bob has hit it on the head. Check it before you go. Declare it,
New Zealand also has a strict control on organic products. I have declared wooden items and got them in OK. I even by accident reliesed I was taking a blown egg in to Austrilia. I put it on my entry form. They asked how I cleaned it and was it a farm egg. Once I answered and I did a trick me and the egg was allowed in to Oz. As your asking these questions you know this is serious. But I am stunned by the amount of people on TV trying to hide stuff and smuggle it into the country. There great guys but they have the law on there side. If you come to NZ give us a shout.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |
