Just curious how many do you guys keep in memory? If I don't continually practice them,
I forget moves etc. So I have only 9 that I practice so I don't forget. how about you? |

Not many. You have to perform regularly so you can remember tricks. If you like to try new stuff or even improvise at times you can remember much more

I keep a list to jog my memory. Then practice three (seems to be the right number for me) Impromtu Card Effects to the point of thoroughly remembering them for performance.

I remember too many to really count but its like riding a bike - you got to jog the memory a bit. But if I run through it a time or two its like jumping back on the bike. I think how many years you perfomed an effect over and over has something to do with how quick it comes back.

10 of my top card tricks that I do the most.
But I have in my phone almost a 100 or less in text format Separated into many categories and with short descriptions of setups and others notes that help me remember them. |

If you truly understood the meaning of an 'impromptu' card trick, then you wouldn't need to ask the question.
The answer, quite obviously, is an infinite number.

Remember your tricks in sets of 3, that way you can remember more tricks. Also write out a list of the tricks you do, and keep it in your wallet as a reminder. When your performing for a group and you space out, pull out the list to jog your memory.

Well Merc Man, I think I and everyone else here who gave an answer consider impromptu to mean with a regular deck vs using a gimmicked deck. I guess I should have said fasdiu but I'm sure most intelligent people are able to understand what I meant

I have about 20 that I regularly perform and five that are my "go to" any time, any condition, any deck provided effects.
As far as remembering all effects, I keep them in a journal with a condensed step by step synopsis of each effect. In my wallet I always have four regular aces which I use to perform Ambitious Rendezvous (from BOD). Larry |

After all, there ARE card tricks/routines with normal cards that would certainly NOT fall into the category of 'impromptu' - stacked decks and heavy set-ups spring instantly to mind.

Well, I've forgotten more than most will know...but, off the top of my head, there are 35 that I perform without thinking about them.

Off the top, I counted 27 impromptu and go-to without needing to look them up, and thinking in 3's! The topic crosses the line into 'memory'; and I believe this would be where Harry Lorayne may have a few words! I recall reading where Michael Ammar temporarily forgot how to perform Virginia City Shuffle, featured in one of his L&L videos; so this happens to even the greats. Lynn

Maybe 6. That's way more than I need. I don't do card tricks much but way back when, I wouldn't do more than two unless somebody asked for more. More is often not better. Better one knockout routine.

I am working on a system that classifies card tricks into categories. Each category will have a name and include three tricks. Because the category is themed there will be a common thread of patter that not only takes me through all three, but helps me remember how to do them.
That way I can drag out a deck of cards that is already pre-set for the first trick and then the next two can involve a "force" or is self-working. I can comfortably carry two decks which are in different pockets. That gives me six quality card tricks that tie-together. Now I only have to remember two themes and hopefully that will simplify and trigger my thought process. I am having fun putting the sets together, but unfortunately about the time I have one set figured out, I come across another trick I think is better! Gaaaack!! |

As a serious hobbyist this is an issue I keep fighting and until recently, I think I'm winning.
Try not to remember tricks, but rather "sets" ( First read that in a Mike Skinner book ). Put 2 or 3 tricks together and try to work out of a shuffled deck in use, using methods to prepare setups in advance. This way you can carry a deck anywhere not worrying of doing setups in advance for that ACAAN you want to try out. Learn culling systems. Card College ( vol.4 ? ) has few methods besides the spread cull. Vol.5 has a great way to set up a stack trick in the context of a trick, same goes for Harry Lorayne's method to set up for his Out of This Universe, as taught in the Classic Collection vol.1. Another thought ( and this is what I'm currently working on )is to reliably get into a stacked order using faros from a new deck order. I have 2 sets in mind for stacked deck work, which then I can continue with other stuff if needed. All you'd need is a carrying a new sealed deck around. Obviously the best next step then is to perform them. I remember far more tricks than I did one year ago because I perform much more frequently now, as I strive to stay away from ACRs and 2CM. In terms of apps I highly recommend Evernote, syncs up notes from your phone automatically to your computer, free and is really cool. Speaking of improvisation, Justin Higham has 2 booklets on that on his website or Vanishing Inc. I havent read them but plan to real soon. My experience with few of his other publications was great, very underrated magician I think. - Feras |
