Hi all,
My name is Ian, I live in Nottingham and magic has been a serious hobby of mine for about 18 months now. I have a couple of friends mildly interested in the arts, but having accidentally bumped into Marc Oberon in a bar a few weeks ago who gave me a few tips and taught me some amazing things (Thanks Marc if you're reading - really appreciate your time) I realised the huge benefits of spending time with others who take a serious interest or make a profession out of performing. So if you are local please free to drop me a message should you want to go for a drink! I've had a interest in magic for as long as I remember - however whilst I might have researched a few things, I never put much time into it until recently. In the last year and a half, I've spent a lot of time reading and practising and intend to knock that up a gear in the new year by working on a set to apply to the Nottingham Guild of Magicians. I'm spending a lot of time reading though the posts on here at the moment and picking up some fantastic tips to thanks to everyone that takes the time to share their ideas. I'm still trying to figure out a solid style and persona, I'm hoping that will come to me soon... I have a strange habit of buying decks of cards, and my card collection now is getting out of hand. I figured having been reading a lot on here I should say hello, so - Hello, and happy New Year! |

Welcome, Ian. It will be the New Year before you know it. Actually, it will be there for you, before it comes to me in the States. Have a safe Holiday.

Welcome pookey,
Usually I have to know someone very well before I'd call them pookey. You are right about a little face time with good Magicians being a big help. Good luck with your application performance. Word of advice, keep it simple and easy to do. Most clubs don't need to be blown away by a new applicant to let them in. After you are in you'll have years to impress them. I've seen a lot of uncomfortable performances from Magicians who are overextended in trying to impress. I guess I'll see you in "Table Hoppers and Party Strollers". Happy New Year! -Mary Mowder |

Hi Ian, I look forward to meeting you at the NGM in the New Year - I joined in 2013 and I'm very glad that I did. Personally I found the 'journey' of putting together an audition a great experience. The members are extremely helpful and supportive and to echo Mary Mowder's advice they all want you to do well.

Thanks for the kind words Ken!
Putting something together is proving to be quite fun, trying to script things, buying in books for ideas, etc. The hardest part is trying desperately to train one of my cats to pick a card and look surprised when I can read their facial expressions during a lie detector demonstration. I've just booked some tickets to Blackpool too - looking forward to that a lot. |
